LOS ANGELES (AP) — Earthquake early warning alerts will become publicly available throughout California this week, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Wednesday.The system's statewide debut Thursday will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that ravaged the San Francisco Bay area on Oct. 17, 1989, as well as the annual Great Shakeout safety drill.The warnings produced by the ShakeAlert system will be pushed through a smartphone app called MyShake and the same wireless notification system that issues Amber Alerts.The state earthquake app, developed at the University of California, Berkeley, is available for download to IOS users through iTunes and through GooglePlay stores for Android phones.The system does not predict earthquakes. Rather, it detects the start of an earthquake and calculates location, intensity and sends alerts to areas where shaking is likely to occur from quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.The alerts have been in development for years and last year were made broadly available to businesses, utilities, schools and other entities.Large-scale public notification has been available for Los Angeles County since the start of the year through an app developed for the city of Los Angeles, but it hasn't been triggered yet. 1300

LONG ISLAND — Mini horses visited health care workers at Katz Women’s Hospital on Long Island as an expression of gratitude toward the overtaxed medical staff.HorseAbility, a Long Island organization, brought the horses to the hospital for the visit on world gratitude day.Normally, the horses work with people with special needs, but the team at HorseAbility felt health care workers battling COVID-19 could use some time with the horses.“They say there are so many benefits in pet therapy, it doesn’t matter what the animal is the result is the same, it’s a reduction in stress,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Employees became emotional, sharing how the calmness of the horses was reminding them to remain calm.This story originally reported by Keith Lopez on PIX11.com. 830

LONDON — The British government says it won’t be using 50 million face masks it bought during a scramble to secure protective equipment for medics at the height of the coronavirus outbreak because of safety concerns.The masks were part of a 252 million pound (2 million) contract the government signed with investment firm Ayanda Capital in April. Papers filed in a court case reveal that the masks will not be distributed because they have ear loops rather than head loops and may not fit tightly enough.The government says another 150 million masks supplied by Ayanda are unaffected but are still being tested.The papers are part of a lawsuit against the Conservative government by campaigning groups the Good Law Project and EveryDoctor.As the coronavirus outbreak accelerated across the U.K. in March, it became clear that the country lacked sufficient stockpiles of masks, gloves, gowns and other protective gear for health care workers and nursing home staff. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A police investigation confirmed suicide was the cause of death of a Black man found hanging from a tree in a Southern California city park last month. Los Angeles County sheriff's officials made the announcement at a Thursday news conference. The body of 24-year-old Robert Fuller was found early on June 10 in a park near City Hall in Palmdale. Sheriff's deputies found no evidence of a crime and an autopsy conducted the next day produced an initial finding of suicide. That outraged Fuller's family, who said he wouldn't have taken his own life. They said authorities were too quick to dismiss the possibility it was a crime. 656

LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the deadliest accidents in recent U.S. maritime history was the fault of the owners of a dive boat whose lack of oversight resulted in a fire that swept through the vessel and killed all 34 people in their bunks below deck. The National Transportation Safety Board says Tuesday the Conception's captain failed to post a roving night watchman aboard the Southern California scuba dive vessel, which allowed the fire to quickly spread and trap the 33 passengers and one crew member. The NTSB also faulted the Coast Guard's inadequate regulations. Attorneys for the boat's owner and the captain did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 678
