SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland.Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times.He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland.She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland.The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present.He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester.While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said.While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stunning photo of a female surfer riding the waves was taken at sunset in Cardiff, and the photographer who took the image is hoping to find her.Los Angeles-based photographer Robin Kerr is inspired by nature. She has been taking nature and wildlife photos since she was a child.“My dad lent me his camera on our family vacation to Montana in 1989, ever since then I’ve had the bug,” said Kerr.Kerr said she had visited some amazing places to take photos, but her trip to San Diego in 2018 is one of her favorites.“I took a trip down to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to see all of the wildlife there," said Kerr. “It had rained on and off all day. I was thinking it might be a really great sunset, something dramatic with the clouds.”Kerr made her way to Cardiff just before it got too dark to snap pictures of the beach. At that moment, she took a stunning photo of a female surfer gliding on the water, in front of a golden sunset.“You can tell she’s just experiencing so much joy in the photo, doing what she loves," Kerr told ABC 10News.Kerr said while taking photos of other objects on the beach, she missed meeting the surfer. She posted the picture, and another zoomed-in image of the woman on her social media accounts, hoping to find her. She had no luck. Nearly two years later, she is resuming her search.“I came across that picture again; I thought man it would be so great to actually find her," Kerr said.Kerr said she has not been able to retake a photo like this.
