SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former longtime San Diego Zoo biologist has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the iconic zoo.Matthew John Anderson, 49, of Ramona, Calif., admitted to stealing more than 6,000 through bogus vendor invoices between December 2008 and October 2016, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators say Anderson created 35 fake invoices billing the San Diego Zoo for various payments from purported vendors. The zoo paid the invoices to third parties that then gave the bulk of the payment to Anderson. In some cases, the payments went directly to accounts controlled by Anderson.RELATED: Hillcrest store owner is getting her stolen jade Buddha statue backAnderson worked for more than 17 years for the zoo, starting as a research fellow and going on to serve as the Director of Behavioral Biology for the zoo's Conservation Research. He was fired in 2017.“When an employee is elevated to a position of leadership, it is a sign of that company’s trust in the integrity and honesty of that person,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Brunner. “When an employee violates that trust and abuses their position to defraud and steal money for personal benefit, the FBI stands ready to hold them accountable.”Anderson has been charged with theft or conversion concerning programs receiving federal funds. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine. He's scheduled to be sentenced on June 8. 1514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison. On a live stream to the courtroom while sitting in jail, Daniel Dorado was read his term after several women gave their victim impact statements. The former owner of Voce Del Mare was found guilty last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four victims who were unconscious and intoxicated. ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when he was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant.Fighting back tears on Tuesday, one victim described her trauma from meeting Dorado after answering an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position. "Years after the assault, I still don't feel safe going to job interviews in-person, alone. I don't feel safe to do outdoor activities alone. I can't tolerate being around men. Not even family," she stated."He is an evil individual," said another woman who added, "I simply went on a date with him and ended up getting sexually assaulted by him for hours in a hotel room where I was unconscious."One woman who was named as a victim defended Dorado on Tuesday and said that she was even friends with him. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault. She told the judge, "Your honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."Dorado addressed the courtroom and denied any wrongdoing. He added, "I have spoken the truth since the very first day that this all began. I did not skip town. I did not make faces to the accusers. I am still in shock by what has happened." He maintains his innocence and has said that every sexual encounter was consensual."The total term of imprisonment is 40 years. I don't mind saying [that] I believe this is the maximum I can impose under the law," the judge told the courtroom. Dorado was also ordered to pay ,000 in restitution.ABC10 News reached out to the DA's Office for a response regarding the woman who defended Dorado during the hearing. The DA's Office sent the following statement."Today’s comments in open court by the judge, the victims and our prosecutor along with the evidence presented at trial, all support the just result and appropriate sentence in this case." 2469

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bill created to improve warehouse working conditions has passed the state's Senate Labor Committee.Assembly Bill 3056, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, ensures warehouse workers can take a restroom break, use a hand-washing station, drink water, or take a legally mandated break without fear of being fired.“We shouldn’t need to write a bill to make sure warehouse workers are able to take a restroom break or wash their hands without being reprimanded. But time and time again, Amazon has shown disregard for the safety of their workers -- even during this ongoing public health crisis,” Gonzalez said.AB 3056 not only applies to Amazon workers, but also to those who work at Target, Walmart, and other retailer warehouses. There has been an exponential rise in online sales leading to several companies adding automated systems to control the workflow. Worker productivity is monitored to determine whether someone has met a specified rate or quota of items pulled.Automated systems generate warnings when too many time-off tasks occur in a worker’s shift, and accumulated warnings can result in workers being fired without a human manager even being involved. The bill would establish civil penalties for an employer of 0 per employee for an initial violation, and ,000 per employee for subsequent violations. 1355
