(KGTV) -- One of the El Cajon Police Department’s K9s, K9 Jester, is being assigned a new partner after his current partner resigned from the department.After working with Jester for the last two and a half years, Officer Jordan Walker voluntarily resigned to work for another agency, according to the department. Walker said he offered to pay for Jester, who was brought in through a Ben Roethlisberger?Foundation grant. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced late Friday that the US government will extend a federal student loan forbearance on borrowers for an additional month as more businesses are closing due to a surge in coronavirus cases. This means that payments of federal student loans will not be due in January.The decision does not impact private student loans, which have generally still required repayment by Americans during the pandemic.While the federal student loan forbearance is scheduled to end on January 31, President-elect Joe Biden has discussed taking more permanent action on reducing the student loan burden on millions of Americans.Federal student loans were placed on forbearance in March. In August, President Donald Trump directed DeVos to extend the forbearance through the end of 2020. While those who wanted to continue making student loan payments were able to continue doing so, automatic payments of federal student loans stopped early in the pandemic as unemployment levels jumped to record levels.Amid the forbearance period, the federal government was not charging interest on borrowers."The coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges for many students and borrowers, and this temporary pause in payments will help those who have been impacted," said DeVos. "The added time also allows Congress to do its job and determine what measures it believes are necessary and appropriate. (KGTV) -- A man in his mid-30s was killed Sunday afternoon after the SUV he was driving struck a tree in El Cajon.El Cajon police say the driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer drifted onto a center divider then slammed into the tree on N Second Street near Greenfield Drive at 1:49 p.m.The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending family notification.Surveillance video from a nearby store shows the impact of the crash and the aftermath. Several good Samaritans ran over to try to help the driver until police arrived.N Second Street between Persimmon Avenue and Greenfield Drive was closed off for approximately four hours as police investigated.Police said it was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. (KGTV) -- Christian Unified Schools of San Diego welcomed junior and high school students back to campus on Tuesday.The El Cajon-based school district brought elementary school students back to school last week, and district officials said now it's time for the other grades to join.The school's website lists many of the precautions they're taking, including multiple temperature checks. Students will get their temperature checked before they are dropped off at school, and then again before entering the building.Everyone on campus must wear a mask or face shield, and students must wash or sanitize their hands before they enter each classroom.The district says social distancing will be observed in all classrooms. EL CAJON (KGTV) – An El Cajon property owner said a police pursuit in March that ended at her property has led to questions over repairs.Jenny Wu has owned the property in the Villa Madera condominium complex on Mollison Avenue for more than a decade. On March 19, a vehicle crashed into her home, causing extensive damage.According to Wu, she had two elderly renters living there at the time of the crash, with one ending up in the hospital. She said she gave the information about what happened to her homeowner’s association immediately following the incident.More than five months after the crash, her property is still boarded up.Through her translator, she said the HOA wanted to investigate. Wu and her son said communication from the HOA and the property management company on the process to fix the condo has been spotty.Dan Zimberoff is an attorney who specializes in HOA matters.He is not involved in the case, but said the association typically insures common area.“When you have a singular affected homeowner like you do here, many times I see the association allows that homeowner have direct access with the adjuster. It just streamlines the processes and allows that direct communication,” Zimberoff said.Wu was one of the many temporarily laid off from her job at a local casino because of the pandemic. She still pays HOA fees at her condo, which adds up to roughly 0 per month.The president of Property Management Consultants said Team 10 has “been told many inconstancies [sic].” President Hugh Maynard said the insurance company would be contacting Team 10 with information, but the company never reached out. Maynard said the owner did not carry their own insurance and the HOA is paying the deductible.He added that they have kept the “family up on every turn of events” and showed Team 10 emails as proof.
