(KGTV) -- Business owners in Barrio Logan are unhappy with the San Diego City Council's decision to fund the three temporary homeless tents opening on December 1st. The council voted 8-1 on Tuesday in favor of the funding. Council-member Alvarez was the only one to vote no, saying the city missed a chance to really solve the problem. The owners of Ryan Bros Coffee say their shop already deals with homeless on a regular basis. Their shop is less than half a mile away from one of the tents schedule to go up on 16th and Newton. Co-owner Tom Ryan says they’ve had people overdose in the bathroom or collapse, sick on the ground inside the store. Ryan’s staff is getting ready to see the number of homeless go up during the winter. The other two tents are in the Midway District and the East Village.  856

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has criticized grocery store chain Wegmans and several other chains for allegedly selling coconut milk made from fruit harvested by abused monkeys.According to PETA, monkeys are "forced to climb trees to pick coconuts" for coconut milk made by the brand Chaokoh. The company says that Wegmans is one of the few grocery store chains still selling the product.In an open letter to Wegmans CEO Colleen Wegman, PETA claimed that an investigation by the organization found that coconut growers in the industry were harvesting fruit with monkeys that were "confined for life, sometimes with their teeth removed, always on chains, and often driven insane from being deprived of everything that's natural and important to them."PETA also added that it is delivering "humanely obtained: coconuts to Wegmans this week.In response, Wegmans said that PETA had sent letters to several other retailers regarding the coconut milk, and added that the store is "actively investigating the matter."In July, the Thailand-based maker of Chaokoh coconut milk, Theppadungporn Coconut Co. BOCA RATON, Fla. - Inside Boca Helping Hands, Mel Lazerick mans the pantry desk and hands out apples and bags of produce."I like to do things for other people because I've been fortunate," said Mel, who has devoted most of his life volunteering.At 100-years-old, Mel is the oldest volunteer and donates his time to help feed the hungry three days a week. Executive Director Greg Hazle describes Mel as an inspiration."Just to be active at that age and active helping people is an inspiring way to live," Hazle said.Mel has been handing out groceries at Boca Helping Hands for 20 years with a smile and a sense of humor."I worked it in with my golf and tennis, and I was able to find time," Mel said. "People are very nice to me, and I try to be nice to them."Mel moved from Ohio years ago and settled in South Florida. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Helping Hands, and has worked side-by-side with long-time buddy Harold Bader."He's very well-liked. He's very hard-working, even though he's 100," said Bader, who picks Mel up and drives him home. "It made me realize age has nothing to do with your abilities to do things, and he proves that every day.Mel has been volunteering for decades. He joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters more than 70 years ago, and he still keeps in contact with his two younger brothers."One is 65-years-old and one is 92," Mel said.Now, Mel will be honored for his service on October 20, when Boca Helping Hands will celebrate its volunteers. BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A large area of Boulder County, including the towns of Jamestown and Ward, are under a mandatory evacuation order after two new wildfires sparked over the weekend.The 8,788-acre Calwood Fire started Saturday and is burning near the Cal-Wood Education Center in the Jamestown area. Officials Sunday night confirmed that 26 homes were lost to the fire, so far, mostly on the eastern side of the fire along Mountain Ridge Drive and Foothills Ranch Drive. No injuries were reported.The Calwood Fire was about 15% contained as of Sunday night. The most concerning area of the fire was the northern ridge of the fire area, due to the steep, rocky terrain and dry fuels, officials said.On Sunday, a new wildfire, dubbed the Lefthand Canyon Fire, started in the 14000 block of Lefthand Canyon Drive near the town of Ward. It has charred 312 acres as of Sunday night. Crews were still battling the fire Sunday but had contained the blaze north of Lefthand Canyon Drive.Smoke from both fires can be seen throughout most of Boulder and the surrounding area.The Boulder County fires prompted authorities to send out pre-evacuation notices to thousands of residents nearby, including people in the town of Lyons. In the Calwood Fire, there are 1,600 homes and 2,600 structures total in the evacuation area, and around 3,000 people impacted.Several roads are closed, including County Road 87, and officials evacuated Hall Ranch and Heil Valley trails.The map below shows the areas under an evacuation or pre-evacuation order:There is an evacuation check-in point for the Calwood Fire set up at 3460 N. However, unfavorable weather conditions Sunday grounded aircraft. At least 250 firefighters are on the ground fighting the blaze.The Calwood Fire has become Boulder County's largest wildfire on record.County and Forest Service investigators are investigating the cause of the Calwood Fire.
