For Tammi Fitzgerald, being a flight attendant was an adventure. So much so, she thought she’d never want to retire from American Airlines. "I don't think there's a flight attendant out there that doesn't have a love affair with what they are doing," Fitzgerald says.But things took a turn after a strange incident in 2010. While on one flight, Fitzgerald says she smelled an unusual odor that made her sick. "My eyes were watering,” she describes. “I had a headache that was like on the front of my head, and it was just a bass drum and my nose started dripping." Since then, Fitzgerald says she experienced several of what the airline industry calls "fume events.” "It's like kind of sticking and exhaust pipe out your car into your cabin and not doing anything about it," says Dr. Susan Michaelis, an aviation health and safety consultant. Michaelis, a former pilot, has a PHD in safety science. Some of her research on fume events has been published by the World Health Organization. Some experts say fume events happen because part of the air passengers breathe is pulled through the jet's engine. If it mixes with oils and chemicals and then goes into the cabin, they say it can make people sick. According to research done at Kansas State University, there are on average five fume events a day in the U.S. Judith Anderson with the Association of Flight Attendants worries it's a larger problem. "Because airlines are not required to report what are called fume events when they happen on the ground, that estimate of five or so per day is an underestimate of what's actually happening," Anderson says. Boeing disputes this, saying “cabin air is safe to breathe" and "exposure to trace levels of organophosphate contamination" is not harmful. "The initial symptoms can be flu-like symptoms, stomach cramping so you might think, ‘I’m coming down with something,’” Anderson says. “Many people report symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide gas, like headache, dizziness, fainting, disorientation, those sorts of symptoms." American Airlines told us they train crews to report fume events. Southwest says they use the modern Boeing 737, which has systems to keep the cabin safe. JetBlue didn't have an answer to our questions. Several airlines didn't respond at all. As for Fitzgerald, she says she had to take leave from her job because of fume events, and she eventually retired. Medical records show she was suffering from inhalation irritation. On Thursday, the United States Air Force Academy announced that President Trump nominated Lt. General Richard M. Clark to become the Academy's first Black superintendent. According to the U.S. Air Force Academy, if the Senate confirms Lt. Gen. Clark's nomination, he will become the second Black general to head up a service academy. He will be in charge of the Academy's undergraduate academic program, cadet military, and athletic training and character development.“I am extremely humbled and honored by the nomination to serve as the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Clark. “I’m also excited for the opportunity to build on the tremendous work of Lt. Gen. [Jay] Silveria and to give back to the institution that has given me so much. Go Falcons!”Clark has a history of leadership with the Air Force Academy, previously working as the Commandment of Cadets and at other levels of Air Force Command. DENTON, Texas – Get ready for some major closet envy. An impressive collection of clothing, shoes and accessories archives hundreds of years of fashion history. Some even go back 1,000 years. Step inside the 13,000 square foot space and you’ll find endless racks of clothing and accessories packed from floor to ceiling. “These are important parts of fashionista history that need to be preserved,” said Annette Becker, the director of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas. The entire collection has been built through donations. “We have pieces that are examples of French couture from the most elite parts of the fashion design world to things that were made on someone's kitchen table by their grandmother,” said Becker. Started in 1938, UNT took custody of the collection in 1972. Since then it has grown to nearly 20,000 garments and accessories including 1,400 pairs of shoes, 2,500 hats and 750 handbags. Becker proudly shows off some of the collection’s most prized possessions. “This is a dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in the final scene of the film Charade and it was donated to us by Hubert de Givenchy who designed most of Audrey Hepburn's clothing for film,” she said. “We have a wide variety of examples from throughout fashion history in our collection and the oldest piece we have is a pre-Colombian textile fragment that's around 1,000 years old. We have to keep this really carefully stored in this acid free cardboard,” she explains. The piece was woven before synthetic dyes were even created. “So that red color really meant power and status,” said Becker. Today, the archive that spans primarily over 250 years is a valuable historical resource for researchers and students. But right now, it’s only available to visiting designers and research students. The ultimate goal is to document everything in the collection and make it accessible to anyone around the world. “Whether that's 8-year-olds who are thinking about a future career in fashion design to fashion curator curators from Paris who have come to our collection to do research,” said Becker. That means having every single item photographed and digitized so that anyone can see the collection online. Megan DeSoto, an Adjunct Photography Instructor at UNT, is spearheading the effort. “We're taking a lot of time to make these really high-resolution well-made photographs so that they're only handled once photographed once and then taken back to where they're being preserved,” said DeSoto. It’s a unique repository that Becker says will preserve centuries of fashion for generations to come.“Often in the world of fashion we think about these really elite designers and people walking the runways in Paris but really clothing is an art form that's in our everyday lives.” 2800

Megan and Fadil Lee's love story started when the two were freshmen in college, and it may have ended there had Fadil not sent Megan a Facebook message 25 years later. “I was like, OK, is he single or married?” Megan recalls. After dating for a year and a half, the two married, and Fadil wanted to be a first-time father. Megan was on board, despite being 45 years old and already having two adult kids. “Let's face it; we're all living longer, you know,” Megan says. “And I don't think that age should be an inhibitor for you if you're in good health and you're in good shape. I think that those options should be available to you.”Dr. Paul Magarelli, who specializes in fertility for older women, agrees. “Now that we're living to 80, 90 and 100, the idea of a baby at 50 really is not that crazy,” he says. Dr. Magarelli is helping the couple conceive through IVF. “The uterus doesn't age; it’s a muscle. So, they've done successful IVF and women with donor egg up to age 74 and still got healthy babies,” Dr. Magarelli says. Megan is planning to use her own eggs, but the reality is most older women use frozen or donor eggs. “Once you reach the age of 44 and above the number of eggs that are available to make a baby are preciously few, so most families at some point will use donor eggs,” Dr. Magarelli says. There are significant risks for both mother and baby, including gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, as well as pregnancy loss. Babies also have a higher risk of chromosome abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. Megan and Fadil say they are aware of the risks and are being proactive. “We are going to do genetic testing on the embryos because of our age,” Megan says. “So, we want to make sure that all the chromosomes are supposed to be there are there in full and complete.” These come along with a hefty price tag. Standard IVF treatments can cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000. Paying out of pocket for the procedure, the couple hopes everything goes right on their first try.“We both have a very strong faith, and so if stuff doesn't work out, then we're going to look at that as a sign from God that we're just not supposed to be parents at this stage in our life,” she says. 2232
