STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Hig Roberts, a decorated Alpine skier, has come out as gay.The two-time U.S. national champion joins a small group of LGBTQ skiers who have come out publicly in a sport that The New York Times describes as “closed and clubby.” That includes freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, who revealed he is gay on ESPN in 2015.This makes the 29-year-old the first current or former male Alpine skier of his caliber to come out publicly in Alpine skiing, The Times reports. In an interview with The Times, Roberts said Alpine skiing has a hyper-masculine vibe and he was pressured to conform. He said that eventually, not being able to be openly gay as a professional athlete was hindering his performance.Roberts, who grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, retired from skiing in March 2019 and moved to Norway to work in finance, but has since moved back to the U.S.He told The Times that he decided to come out in part to inspire young skiers and to let them know they can compete at the highest levels no matter their sexuality.Throughout his career, Roberts made 31 World Cup starts, competed for the U.S. Ski team and won two national titles. He never got the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, but he was the first alternate in the 2018 Pyeongchang, according to Out Magazine.Still, Roberts told the magazine that he hopes to get involved with Olympic athletes in the future to foster spaces where athletes are comfortable to be themselves, while still working to be the best in their sports. 1522

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As more schools reopen to in-person lessons, Florida's Department of Health, and many other states, are not publishing statewide data on school district COVID-19 cases."The Department is continuing to review and determine the most appropriate method for reporting outbreaks in schools," a statement from the Florida department reads. While officials may yet remedy the absence of school data — one Floridian isn't waiting.Rebekah Jones, the ousted Florida Health data expert, has partnered with Google and nonprofit FinMango to create a website called The COVID Monitor. It aims to track cases not only in schools here— but across the nation, from kindergarten to college."Pretty much everybody was like, 'this doesn't exist … this does not exist,'" Jones said. "I was like, 'OK, let's build it.'"The site sweeps up COVID-19 data from across the web. Things like press releases, news stories, info from health departments and more. It includes taking anonymous tips from school teachers. The Monitor team then verifies the details, looking for additional sources or contacting districts, before marking cases confirmed."We make sure that we check the information we're putting up there, which is for me, one of the most important elements," Jones said. "I would never want to put out inaccurate information."Officials terminated Jones from Florida Health after she made allegations the department was misrepresenting data earlier this year in the pandemic. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis later told the press that Jones was fired for insubordination."Yeah, it's a non-issue," DeSantis said in June.Jones has since become a public figure, critical of the state's handling of COVID-19. Her new website, she hopes, will provide clarity at a time when many are seeking answers."We want people to know this is a place that they can go to," Jones said. "Letting them say, 'Hey, there is a resource out there for this.'"This story originally reported by Forrest Saunders on wptv.com. 1998

TAMPA, Fla. — A kitten in Florida is recovering after being stabbed in the face with a dart.Jennifer Tate volunteers with the St. Francis Society Animal Rescue and she can’t wait to bring home the kitten.“We saved a cat about two and half years ago that had been shot with an arrow and we named him Sir Robin. So, we thought it would be appropriate to name her Maid Marian, the love interest of Sir Robin Hood," said Tate.Hillsborough County Animal Services is trying to find out who’s responsible for hurting the cat.“The person that found her said she could not open her mouth, so it had pierced all the way through and actually into part of her throat," Tate said.Someone found the kitten on Aimiee Court, south of Bearss Avenue in Tampa.“It’s horrific. How does somebody walk up to a cat and jam something into her face? And walk away. How do you sleep at night," said Tate.If Maid Marian is ready, she’ll have surgery Friday at Gulf Coast Veterinary Center.Tate will foster her, but eventually, the hope is the kitten will be adopted.“We want her to have the best life and to be able to put this behind her. And we want to catch the person who did it so we can stop him from hurting more cats," she said.Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Hillsborough County Animal Services at 813-744-5660.If anyone wants to help with Maid Marian's care, St. Francis Society Animal Rescue accepts donations at https://stfrancisrescue.org/This story was originally published by Erik Waxler at WFTS. 1515
