PARKER, Colo. — When 22-year-old Hannah McNeill went to sleep one night in August earlier this year, she had no idea her life was going to be dramatically altered. She woke up, couldn't move her legs and eventually was diagnosed with a rare polio-like disease that is now on the rise in Colorado."You never think it would happen to you so you don't prepare for it," she told KMGH. Acute flaccid myelitis is a spinal disease caused by a form of enterovirus. It's extremely rare and usually impacts children, causing loss of feeling and use of the arms or legs. It can leave children with permanent paralysis. "I was trying to move my toes and my feet and nothing would happen," she explained. "I knew what I wanted to do but I couldn’t pull my leg up, couldn’t take a step."Health officials report 14 cases in Colorado so far in 2018. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said of those cases 11 people tested positive for enterovirus A71, one tested positive for enterovirus D68 and two people tested negative for any type of enterovirus."While all the patients were hospitalized, nearly all have fully recovered. There have been no deaths," CDPHE's Shannon Barbare said in a statement. But McNeill still hasn't fully recovered. "I still don't have all my leg strength which is why I'm in a wheelchair," she said."There is no vaccination or specific treatment for enteroviruses. People with mild illness typically need treatment only for symptoms," Barbare said in a statement. "However, some illnesses caused by EV-A71 and EV-D68 can be severe enough to require hospitalization."Colorado has previously had outbreaks of the less-common enterovirus types. Enterovirus D68 sickened 11 people with AFM. Enterovirus A71 caused similar epidemics to this year's in 2003 and 2005, the CDPHE said.The CDC has a web page devoted to AFM. It says that most patients afflicted by the disease are children and that scientists have not yet determined a single pathogen detected in patients’ spinal fluid that causes AFM.But in McNeill's case, she said she's not done getting back to her normal life. She goes to physical therapy three times a week and has been making progress in the weeks since she was released from the hospital. "Two months ago I couldn’t walk, now I can in my walker," she said. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man suspected of smuggling several people into the U.S. from Mexico led Border Patrol agents on a chase before injecting himself with heroin, the agency says. According to the agency, the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine Valley immigration checkpoint. After approaching the checkpoint in a 2001 Mercedes sedan with five passengers, the man was referred to a secondary inspection area before speeding away. After sliding off the road along I-8 near the Pine Valley Road exit, all five of the passengers ran out of the vehicle and into nearby brush. The driver, however, stayed in the sedan and began injecting himself with a black substance later identified as heroin. He was arrested on smuggling charges and is currently undergoing a medically monitored detox. The group included two men, two women, and a 16-year-old boy. They were uninjured in the crash and taken to a Border Patrol station to be processed for removal. “This is another example of the dangerous acts human smugglers perform for financial gain and how they show no regard for human life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Fortunately, this pursuit came to a safe conclusion and ended with the driver in custody.” 1643

PALM CITY, Fla. -- A new dog training facility is almost complete in Florida. Its goal is to rescue pups and turn them into service dogs for veterans who need them now even more than ever during a pandemic.Veteran Suhir Shrestha was born in Nepal and moved to the U.S. He was so thankful for his life here that he decided to enlist in the military as a way to give back, at 39 years old."I deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 and there, obviously, it was a war zone," he said.Shrestha said when he returned, he suffered from PTSD, depression and anxiety."I had a lot of suicidal thoughts and a lot of negative thoughts, nightmares, flashbacks, what have you," he said. "It was very difficult to lead a life."It's a life that has recently take on new meaning with Indie by his side."It has been a tremendous life-changer for me," he said. "Before, I used to be not able to go outside, be nervous of a crowd and just have negative thoughts in me."Indie was adopted from the shelter-to-service dog program through Furry Friends Adoption Clinic and Ranch."Gives me extra confidence to go outside because I have him," Shrestha said."These dogs are coming from high-kill shelters in many cases," said Pat Deshong, the president of Furry Friends Adoption Clinic and Ranch. "We don't necessarily take them to be service dogs, but we take them because they are high energy."The group is building a new training center in Palm City and is weeks away from completion. It's all in an effort to bring veterans from across the country to Florida to adopt."These veterans are so deserving of these dogs," Deshong said. "We don't automatically pick which dog is right for the veteran. Pepsi is buying one of the world's top sparkling water brands.The drinks company announced Monday that it would take over SodaStream, an Israeli company that sells do-it-yourself seltzer makers, in a deal worth .2 billion.The move will boost Pepsi's efforts to shift from its traditional high-calorie soft drinks business to offering healthier options.SodaStream's products, marketed as a healthy alternative to sugary sodas, fit Pepsi's goal of "making more nutritious products while limiting our environmental footprint," Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi said in a statement. Poland's embassy in Tel Aviv was daubed with swastikas on Sunday, a day after Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki caused outrage by claiming Jews were among the perpetrators of the Holocaust.Profanities were scrawled across a noticeboard outside the embassy and a swastika had been drawn on the entrance gate.
