BROOKLYN, N.Y. – At Canarsie Educational Campus in Brooklyn, the lesson plan was switched up for a day. Instead of learning history, English or math, students learned about what being in a gang is like. And, they learned from those who know that world best. “Let me ask y’all a question, what today is promoting the violence amongst y’all?” asked Kareem Nelson in front of a dozen students inside a classroom.Nelson was born and mostly raised in Harlem. He’s a former member of a street gang known as “The Black Mafia.”“I started selling crack cocaine at 12 years old,” said Nelson. “I was a follower. I had low self-esteem, so I did the things I thought would help me fit in.”At the tender age of 12, Nelson told students he thought gang life offered glory, friendship and some protection. He ultimately would learn the hard way, none of that was true.“I went to Baltimore, thought I was the toughest guy in the world, and I got shot,” Nelson explained to students. That’s what put him in a wheelchair. He was paralyzed and lost half a lung. However, eventually it was that moment and another gang-related near death experience that helped him give up gang life. “I escaped with my life and from that night on, I said ‘I don’t want kids to have to go through what I went through,’” Nelson explained.Seven years ago, Nelson founded 1343
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday that it’s unlikely that a single brand is responsible for the outbreak of lung illnesses associated with vaping. As of Wednesday, the CDC says all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have reported 2,291 patients hospitalized with EVALI, the name given to the mysterious illness. A total of 48 deaths have occurred in 25 states and D.C., according to the CDC. That’s 2% of total reported cases. Since February, the largest number of hospitalized EVALI patients was reported during the week of September 15. Since then, the CDC says there has been a steady decline in hospitalized EVALI patients reported weekly to the CDC.Because most patients reported using THC-containing products before noticing symptom, the CDC recommends that the public not use e-cigarette, or vaping, products that contain THC.While health officials don’t believe one brand is to blame for the outbreak, they say “Dank Vapes” is the most frequently reported product brand, used by 56% of hospitalized EVALI patients nationwide. With that said, the CDC says regional differences in THC products have been noted. TKO and Smart Cart brands were more commonly reported by patients in the West region compared with other regions.“The nationwide diversity of THC-containing products reported by EVALI patients highlights that it is not likely a single brand that is responsible for the EVALI outbreak, and that regional differences in THC-containing products might be related to product sources,” wrote the CDC in a report.Although it appears that vitamin E acetate is associated with EVALI, the CDC says many substances and product sources are being investigated, and there might be more than one cause. Therefore, while the investigation continues, officials say people should consider refraining from the use of all e-cigarette, or vaping, products. 1929

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Hours before a 3-year-old boy was found sleeping alone on a porch in Buffalo, New York, the rental car that his parents were driving was burned and human remains were found inside, police said. The parents of the boy, 24-year-old Nicole Merced Plaud and 31-year-old Miguel Anthony Valentin-Colon, as well as their friend, 29-year-old Dhamyl Mirella Roman-Audiffred, are considered missing persons. Now, Buffalo Police have released video that identifies persons of interest after the burned out vehicle was discovered in Buffalo's Black Rock neighborhood near where the boy was found. Police were also able to make a connection between the burned-out car and the toddler found. The department released three videos. The first shows an individual with a shirt over their head walking to the location on Tonawanda Street where the car would be burned. The second shows what appears to be the same person, moving quickly away from the scene with another individual and a child. The individual stops to put a shirt back on their head. On the left side of the frame, a flash can be seen that may be the car being ignited in flames. The third video is a slower, enhanced version of the second video. 1219
