BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) Friday introduced its new spokesmen, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng and Colonel Yang Yujun, to domestic and foreign media during a press tour to an engineering regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Geng, 50, and Yang, 40, have become the ministry's third and fourth spokesmen.Their appointment came ahead of the PLA's founding anniversary on Aug. 1. Their two predecessors, Hu Changming and Huang Xueping, have been transferred to other jobs in the ministry.Geng told Xinhua that the MOD plans to hold regular press briefings, since 16 other ministries have done so.About 140 reporters, photographers and cameramen from home and abroad visited the engineering regiment building in southern suburban Beijing, watching dozens of soldiers demonstrating a mock rescue operation at a building which was "reduced" to rubble in a quake.Founded in 1964, the engineering regiment trains rescue members for the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR), which was established in 2001 with its personnel drawn from the China Seismological Bureau and the General Hospital of the Armed Police Force.The CISAR has completed six domestic rescue operations in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Sichuan, and six international rescue missions in Algeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Haiti.After watching the simulation training, many reporters held interviews with the CISAR members and enquired as to how they managed to work in the face of big disasters."I felt deeply sad and hopeless when someone died in front of me after the quake," said Gao Yansheng, a 19-year-old CISAR member, who took part in the Yushu earthquake search and rescue operation in April.Another CISAR member, whose name was not given, said he was "astonished and also anxious" during the Sichuan earthquake rescue work in 2008.Liu Xiangyang, deputy director of the CISAR, said in an interview with Xinhua that CISAR members became physically and psychologically stronger after going through the Sichuan earthquake rescue work.CISAR members needed to learn more about earthquakes and put up with more complicated disaster situations, Liu added."It will become a routine activity of the PLA to open its military bases for the media interaction beginning around August 1," said Senior Colonel Li Zhen, vice director with the MOD's International Communication Office. BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese government official said Sunday China had approved renewing the operation license of Beijing Guxiang Information Technology Co. Ltd., operator of Google's China website.The official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), who spoke anonymously, told Xinhua that the result of its annual checkup on Google was "Approved after Rectification."Guxiang submitted an application letter to the MIIT on June 29 to renew Google's Internet Content Provider (ICP) license, a permit to run websites in China.In the application letter, Guxiang pledged to "abide by Chinese law," and "ensure the company provides no law-breaking content as stipulated in the 57th statement in China's regulations concerning telecommunications."The statement says that any organization or individual is prohibited from using the Internet to spread any content that attempts to subvert state power, undermine national security, infringe on national reputation and interests, or that incites ethnic hatred and secession, transmits pornography or violence.Guxiang also accepted that all content it provides is subject to supervision of government regulators, said the official.

CHANGCHUN, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Civilians were mobilized Friday to join exhausted soldiers and emergency workers struggling against mounting difficulties to retrieve thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major northeast China river by flood waters two days ago.Some 3,000 full barrels and 4,000 empty ones were swept into the Wende River and on to the Songhua River after floods hit warehouses of two chemical factories in Jilin City, Jilin Province, early Wednesday.As of 6 p.m. Friday, 3,700 of the about 7,000 containers have been retrieved, according to a statement from the provincial government.Provincial authorities vowed to retrieve all the containers before they flow out of Hadashan Reservoir on the lower reaches of Songhua River in Jilin's Songyuan City.However, salvage workers fear some of the barrels, many filled with 170 kilograms of flammable liquid, may have sunk to the bottom of the Songhua River, raising serious risks of lingering water contamination.Chemical barrels were also spotted lying unattended in the debris of flood-devastated villages.At 2 p.m. Friday, the Fengman Reservoir, on a tributary of the Songhua River and 24 km southeast of Jilin City, opened floodgates to discharge flood waters.The water flow at each gate peaked at 800 cubic meters per second around 4 p.m., and at least thousands of residents had been evacuated over Thursday night and Friday morning.Workers said the move might help speed up salvage efforts by washing away floating debris, such as trash, weeds and tree branches, which had hampered the work.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Liu Yunshan has urged the nation's drama workers to produce more elevating works for the people.Liu, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at an annual meeting of China Theatre Association Thursday, attended by drama workers from around the country.He called for the creation of more works showing noble morality, meaningful life pursuits and high artistic qualities from drama creators, which would elevate people's spirits.Their works should also be close to reality, life and the common people, Liu said.Precious drama traditions and folk drama resources should also be cherished, Liu said.The China Theatre Association, founded in 1949, comprises outstanding drama editors, directors, actors, musicians and reviewers from the nation's 260 drama categories.
