Nine-year-old Nariya White loves to concoct slime and make lip gloss. She's an aspiring scientist and an expert at turning simple ingredients into original products. So when she was bullied this past school year, she turned that experience into something positive.“Two girls were bullying me, and I just decided I should make a book about bullying," said White. In March, she wrote a book called "A Slimetastic Day." It was recently published and is available on Amazon. The book is about "encouragement." When two boys call girls dumb, the girls initially become discouraged, but then the girls challenge the boys to slime making competition. The girls use their creativity and knowledge to prevail. White hopes her book inspires other children.“The book was about bullying, so if someone in your school or on the street is bullying you, you shouldn’t really care about it because you have your family, cousins, and friends that care about you," White said.White's mother Kina knew the book would be a bestseller with family and friends but said she didn't expect all the praise they've received from strangers. She hoped publishing the book would help spread the word.“I thought it was important just to make other people aware that you can turn a negative into a positive, and I know that there are many kids that are dealing with the same situation and many parents," said Kina White. The young author leaves her readers with this message, on the book's last page."From that day on, the girls knew that anything boys could do so could girls."WKBW's Gilat Melamed first reported this story. 1598

NEW YORK CITY — A shark washed up on Rockaway Beach in Queens on Monday afternoon, just days before the scheduled reopening of New York City beaches for swimming. The shark appears to have been injured after being caught up on a jetty, a Parks Department spokesperson said. The shark has since died.Parks staff removed the shark's body from the beach."We kindly ask New Yorkers to respect the space of any wild animal and appreciate them from a distance," the spokesperson said. "If you see a wild animal, report the sighting to the WildlifeNYC website."There are about 25 species of sharks in the waters off of New York, according to New York Aquarium Director Jon Dohlin. There are likely sharks nearby any time a swimmer enters the water.City beaches are scheduled to reopen for swimming on July 1.This story was originally published by Aliza Chasan on WPIX in New York. 880

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Joe Biden and Mike Pence crossed paths at a 9/11 memorial service in New York on Friday. The former and current vice presidents were both masked and greeted each other with an elbow bump to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The opponents were at Ground Zero to honor the lives lost there during the terrorist attacks 19 years ago. Their exchange on the anniversary of the 2001 attacks represents a brief pause to an already bitter presidential campaign. At the NYC event organized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Pence and his wife read Bible passages. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo were also in attendance.Friday afternoon, Biden is expected to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, which honors the passengers who stopped the terrorists who hijacked their plane from reaching their presumed target, the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.President Donald Trump spoke at the site’s annual memorial ceremony Friday morning. The two nominees are not expected to cross paths. 1110

NEW YORK — A wealthy benefactor of the disgraced leader of an upstate New York self-improvement group has been sentenced to more than six years in prison in connection with a federal sex slave case.Seagram’s liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman appeared in federal court Wednesday in Brooklyn, where a judge handed her an 81-month prison sentence. She was immediately taken into custody to begin her sentence. Bronfman's lawyers wanted her to get only three years of probation, but prosecutors said she deserves five years behind bars for her support of Keith Raniere.Raniere was convicted of charges last year accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.Raniere is known as the leader of the group NXIVM. Prosecutors say the organization operated like a cult, in which members formed a secret sorority comprised of brainwashed female “slaves” who were forced to have sex with Raniere.Long affiliated with NXIVM, Bronfman reportedly provided millions of dollars to bankroll Raniere and his program of self-improvement classes and paid for lawyers to defend the group against a lawsuit filed by critics.Last year, Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea that she harbored someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for “labor and services.” She also claimed to have committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere.Bronfman’s lawyers argued that she deserved leniency because she didn’t have direct involvement with the most disturbing allegations in the case, but prosecutors said she deserved severe punishment because Raniere likely couldn’t have gotten away with what he did without her. 1640
