As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy.It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans.As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added.As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

Anyone driving on Interstate 15 near Spring Mountain Road near the Las Vegas Strip early this morning may have seen a shocking billboard. It said “Shoot A School Kid Only .”The infamous art collective INDECLINE “vandalized” the sign on Wednesday night. The billboard is used by Battlefield Vegas, which advertises that it is the best indoor shooting range experience in Las Vegas. The sign was also changed to say "DEFEND LIVES REFORM LAWS."INDECLINE says they did it because of “America’s longstanding obsession with gun culture and out government’s inability to honor the victims of mass shootings by distancing themselves from the homicidal policies of the NRA.”INDECLINE says it is "calling on all political parties to immediately work towards a legislative resolution that aims to protect citizens and reform inadequate gun las that are currently placing value on assault weapons over that of human life.”This isn’t the first time that INDECLINE has vandalized a billboard or did something controversial in Las Vegas and other cities around the U.S.INDECLINE was also behind the naked Donald Trump statues in 2016 that popped up in many cities, including Las Vegas, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, the group vandalized a billboard that was promoting a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. They also hung mannequins in suits on billboards with the caption “Dying For Work.” The message on the billboard was covered up before 9 a.m. Thursday. America's largest group of child doctors updated its guidance on cloth face coverings for kids in sports to cover competition on Friday and now recommend youth athletes wear cloth face masks during games.The American Academy of Pediatrics' previous recommendation suggested they wear masks on the sidelines, in between drills, or when entering or leaving the field.In addition to wearing masks during games, the AAP also suggests that practices are kept small and teams do not mix with other teams or coaches.The AAP added that face coverings can be removed when participating in swimming, or where they could become a choking hazard or impair vision like in cheerleading, gymnastics, or wrestling. 706

As a variant strain of the coronavirus spreads through the United Kingdom, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in an interview on ABC News on Tuesday that it’s possible the variant is in the US."That's certainly possible I mean, when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," said Fauci on ABC News.The variant strain has fueled lockdowns and fears in the UK. It also has prompted much of the world to cut off travel to the UK. Health officials fear that the variant strain spreads more easily.The United States has not cut travel between the two countries. Fauci does not expect that to be necessary.“That's not that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now," Fauci said.The CDC reminded the public that viruses often mutate. The CDC added that it’s investigating why this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating.As travel remains permitted between the two nations, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized officials for not cutting off travel. Cuomo did note that several airlines began testing passengers arriving in New York from the UK for the virus."Right now, this variant in the U.K. is getting on a plane and flying to JFK. Right now today,” Cuomo said. “One-hundred twenty countries require a test. We don't. Other European countries have done a ban. We haven't. And today that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before you learn. Be one of the 120 countries that requires a test before you get on a plane to come to the U.S. This is the mistake we made."The United Kingdom has implemented some of its strongest lockdowns since the onset of the pandemic in recent days.
