SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds welcomed veterans home Sunday from their honor flight to the nation's capital where they visited war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and other landmarks.Sixty-four veterans from WWII and the Korean War flew out Friday. The Honor Flights are free for veterans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Locally and nationally, the calls are growing louder for some immigrant detainees to be released. In 2018, Kazakhstan native Satbay Kydyrali, 31, made his way to a local border crossing "He crossed border, turned himself in and asked for asylum," said Almas Irgebayev, Kydyrali's brother.Irgebayev says the asylum claim was denied and is now under appeal, a decision that could be years away. Meanwhile his brother continues to being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. "Last three days, I was just crying when I think about him," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev says his brother is coughing, and in a cell with 7 other men. They are less than two feet apart, and most of the other men are also coughing. His brother told him none of the staff is wearing masks, and the detainees clean their own cell twice a day. The two brothers talk on the phone every day."He says that he wants to get out. I was crying on the phone. I heard him crying as well," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev is fearful because his brother is at-risk. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and has developed chronic breathing issues."I'm in a panic. I am feeling very bad, because I'm helpless," said Irgebayev. Similar sentiments were on display at a socially distant, vehicle protest near the federal courthouse downtown. Immigrant advocates were asking for at-risk detainees to be released. On the same day, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus called on Homeland Security officials to release low-priority detainees.In a statement, a DHS spokesperson says they're following CDC guidelines for disease monitoring and management protocols.' Irgabayev believes that statement doesn't reflect reality."I'm just afraid he is going to die in there," said Irgebayev.Irgabayev says his brother is in day three of a hunger strike protesting the conditions. The number of detainees on the hunger strike has shrunk from 90 to eight since the first day.An employee at the Otay Mesa Detention Center has tested positive, the first employee so far, according to prison company CivicCore. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Jury duty service in San Diego County resumed Friday after a lengthy stoppage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.Courtrooms across San Diego County shut down about seven months ago amid state-mandated restrictions. Now, jurors are able to report once again, with a slew of health and safety precautions in place.Because of the virus, courts have had to change the way they operate, and some lawyers believe this will also affect the process of picking a fair jury.Many aspects of the courts have changed, from added safety precautions to transitioning to virtual court.Prior to the pandemic, there were usually 350-400 people that are summoned to serve as jurors at the Central Courthouse in downtown San Diego. Now, that number has been reduced to 18%-20% of the usual capacity to allow for proper social distancing.Just as before, jurors do have the option to delay their service based on a number of factors including financial reasons, being a caretaker, or having a physical or mental condition.Defense attorney Jan Ronis told ABC 10News, “The kinds of options that were previously available now have new options, in respect to vulnerable conditions and age groups, things of that nature … it’s a whole new world.”Ronis said he believes COVID-19 concerns could impact the jury pool that’s available, with more people opting to postpone their service.“A jury of your peers, which represents a cross-section of society, racially, ethnic, gender-wise, diversify, as far as age and demographic, these are hugely important,” said Ronis.It’s just one of the main challenges the courts will have to deal with as they’re already facing a backlog of cases.Ronis added, “Everyone’s been in limbo; people need to get things resolved, criminal and civil litigants and family courts, things of that nature. It’s really created a horrific situation for so many people.”Jurors that have been called in to report will do so next Tuesday, which is when jury trials are scheduled to begin.Court officials say of the jurors that were summoned this week, nearly 40% have either postponed their service or have been excused from jury duty. 2151
