INDIANAPOLIS — A homeless man was rescued from the back of a garbage truck near Indianapolis early Thursday.According to a report from the Decatur Township Fire Department, rescue crews were called shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday for an injured person.When they arrived, firefighters found an injured person inside the back of a garbage truck.Firefighters said the driver of the trash truck told them he had made two previous stops along Kentucky Avenue, reached his third stop and started the compactor without knowing someone was in the back. The driver told firefighters he heard a man yelling and immediately stopped the compactor and called 911.Firefighters said the man was extricated from the back of the garbage truck within 30 minutes and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.According to firefighters, the man in the back of the garbage truck told rescue crews he was in the dumpster to stay warm because he was homeless. Classes on social movements tend to focus on the past. But this Black Lives Matter class at the University of Colorado in Boulder focuses on what's happening right now. “So, the whole point is to connect what we're studying in the class to what's happening right now in the real world in real time,” says Professor Dr. Reiland Rabaka. Dr. Rabaka spent 18 months preparing for this class, touching on everything from police brutality and racial profiling to immigration and mental health. “People are documenting it as it evolves as it goes along, and that's really incredible,” the professor says. “And the students are very much a part of a lot of these struggles on the ground.” In March, just miles away from campus, a police officer pulled a gun on a black student picking up trash in his yard. The incident made national news, as well as class curriculum. “I did go to the march for that with like a hundred other people, and then the next day, I had class and talked about it,” says junior Makena Lambert. Lambert says she's been waiting for a class like this since the Black Lives Matter movement started. “No one was teaching me about it in high school, and I remember trying to get people to talk about it at my high school and it really remained unacknowledged,” Lambert says. Several universities nationwide have similar classes. There's even a Black Lives Matter Week of Action at elementary, middle and high schools around the country. For PhD student Jenean McGee, she says the class gives students the tools to become leaders and activists themselves.“It's a political statement. It's activism, and we're able to learn in our everyday lives take what we learned in that class and put it out into the world,” McGee says. 1747

TAMPA, Fla. -- With a mandatory mask order underway in the city of Tampa, Will Rivera made sure every customer covered up when inside GNC on South Howard Avenue. "You can’t keep social distancing inside the store because it’s a very small location, it’s not possible. You have more than two, three customers in there, it’s definitely not possible so the safest thing to do is wear a mask," said Rivera. Rivera said he was fired last week for turning away customers not wearing face coverings. Rivera says his district manager stepped in, stating they would not lose sales over the mask mandate. "This is a store founded on health and wellness and it seems like there’s no care of health and wellness of individuals that come into the store, other than profit," said Rivera. After several attempts, GNC has yet to return any calls or emails seeking comment about Rivera's termination or corporate mask policy. This comes as the supplement and vitamin chain announced it has declared bankruptcy and plans to close 800 stores. CLEVELAND — The family of a 75-year-old woman is fighting for more information after they say she received a letter from the Social Security Administration stating that she needed to repay nearly ,000. Teresa Licate of Stow, Ohio, is a two-time cancer survivor that suffers from a heart condition. She recently received a letter from Social Security, dated Oct. 17, 2018, that said she had been mistakenly overpaid ,796 and needed to pay that money back. Teresa's son, David, said she was in considerable distress when she received the letter. "Almost to tears. What am I going to do?” David Licate said of his mother's reaction. A trip to the Social Security offices in nearby Akron weren't of much help. David Licate claims an agent told him that she "didn't have any idea what the problem was." Since October, Social Security has withheld more than 0 a month from Licate's check. But David Licate said his mom's paperwork tells a different story. "We were able to go back and illustrate that they lost the data that the dollar amount was mistaken,” David Licate said. Beyond Social Security's mistake, the Licates are frustrated that Social Security couldn't see an issue coming with Licate's account. “The threshold for a flag to kind of check this out, to make sure this is accurate doesn't have to be ,000,” said David. “I would say a thousand dollars maybe." The Social Security Administration that it could not comment on Licate’s case until the appeals process is complete. "If a bank did this, they would be regulated out of business,” David Licate said. “They wouldn't be able to survive."
