San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Some military legal experts are raising concerns about President Donald Trump's involvement in the war crimes trial of Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher. This comes after the President ordered that medals and honors for prosecutors in the case be revoked."I think it's troubling," said University of San Diego Law Professor Robert Muth in an interview with 10News. "As the Commander in Chief, it would be his prerogative to weigh in if he felt there was something wrong. However, that would be done in a very different way. You would expect it to be done discreetly."Gallagher was accused of several war crimes during a tour of duty in Iraq. The central charge was that he murdered a prisoner of war, a wounded teenage ISIS fighter. Gallagher was acquitted of that charge. The case drew national attention, including from President Trump, who suggested that Gallagher was a hero who was being treated unfairly. Several people criticized how the JAG prosecutors handled the case."President Trump saw that they were abusing their power," said John Dadian, a San Diego political strategist who also served in the Marine Corps. "Not only manacling him during the trial, but confining him to quarters, he had a hard time taling to his lawyers. That's not fair." Dadian says many military veterans believe the President did the right thing by stepping in.Muth is worried about the President's actions setting a precedent. "The fact that the President went and used the bully pulpit, specifically his Twitter account, to essentially punch down at relatively junior folks who by law can't punch back, they just have to take it, is particularly problematic." Muth says the President's public criticism could have a chilling effect on JAG prosecutors who may feel pressured not to handle a case in the way they believe it should be handled because they feel they would be attacked by the President for political reasons. "These are folks who signed up to serve their country and are now being personally attacked by the President of the United States when they're trying to do their job. This isn't the way to do it. It's not how someone should lead. It's certainly not how the President should lead as Commander in Chief." 2240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On a clear, sunny day in February, the sound of a bell announces the arrival of Naval Commander John C. Witte as he boards the USS Annapolis. He's in charge of the roughly 160 sailors who serve aboard the submarine, one of several boats stationed at Naval Base Point Loma."Submarining takes a lot of mental toughness and these guys will work long hours but they'll do what it takes to get the mission done," Witte told 10News. As you can imagine space is limited on board, nearly every inch is utilized, especially in the command area. But that's not to say the crew doesn't ever use their eyes. The periscope is still something the submarine crew utilizes regularly. "We may want to look at what other ships are doing we may want to try to observe other navy's activity stuff like that," Witte said. Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. When it's time to eat, the culinary specialists use the limited supply of ingredients to make every meal and also bake things like fresh bread and cookies pretty often. "We don't carry a lot of pre-made bread because it takes up too much room so a lot of our bread is made fresh a lot of our cookies are made fresh so its a pretty good," Witte explained. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286

SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - A former San Diegan who lives 3 miles from the site of a deadly, massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, is describing the terrifying moments of the blast. Elie Shammas and his family were inside their 6-story Beirut apartment. It all began just after 6pm, and it felt like an earthquake."In San Diego, feels like a rumble, but this was a jittery," said Shammas.Shammas, who taught at SDSU a decade ago, says all his locked windows swung open."The whole house was moving, and then the shock wave hit us. It was very loud. Outside, it was all dusty. I have three kids, who were jittery and scared," said Shammas.Shammas raced downstairs and snapped a photo of a huge smoke plume. Shammas says he can't help but recall Lebanon's bloody civil war."I lived through Lebanon through the war. I'm used to bombings and shellings, and this was like nothing I've seen before," said Shammas.Across the world, in San Diego, news of the blast hitting the Lebanese community hard."Just a shock. When you see it, you can't believe it's happening," said Shammas.Nabi Geha, who owns La Miche Kabobgee in Kearny Mesa, immediately called his niece and a cousin, who both live about four miles from the blast site.
