SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend. While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. Mixing with other groups is prohibited.Lifeguards across the county are preparing for the busy weekend.“It is the big holiday of the summer, so we expect giant crowds,” said Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. “This a tourist destination; everyone wants to come to San Diego. It’s a great place to hang out.”Romero said extra lifeguards would be in place both Friday and Saturday. “We’re just asking people for some compliance, have some common sense, be nice to each other,” he said.Elevated surf and the possibility of dangerous rip currents are expected over the weekend.California Gov. Gavin Newsom also ordered parking facilities at all state beaches in Southern California, and the Bay area to close this weekend. 1839

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California is desperately searching for nurses, doctors and other medical staff, perhaps from as far away as Australia, as the coronavirus surge pushes hospitals to the breaking point. With many of the state's hospitals running out of capacity to treat the severest cases, the state has brought in and deployed more than 500 temporary medical staff members, but it needs a total of 3,000.The staffing shortage in California comes as a surge of COVID-19 cases across the U.S. has led to a nationwide demand for contracted medical workers, particularly nurses with critical care expertise. 616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. Many do giveaways on bases or in military housing communities. In addition to the food, the programs help connect military members and veterans to other social services and resources they have available. To find out more information, you can go to the Courage 2 Call website here.To help, be sure to donate to the Month of a Million Meals campaign from 10News. Every dollar donated helps pay for 4 meals for families in need. 1854

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As deaths in the US from suicide and opioid overdose skyrocket, San Diego health leaders have plans already in action to fight the rising trend."People are living in a lot of pain," says Dana Richardson, who oversees the Community Health and Engagement department at the Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP)."We're talking about promoting resilience, problem-solving skills and reducing isolation."In San Diego in 2017, 458 people committed suicide, and 1,266 people died from an overdose. Richardson says the link between the two can't be ignored. The Centers for Disease Control says those two factors are the reason that life expectancy dropped in the US for the first time in years. According to a CDC report, someone born in 2018 can expect to live to be 78.6 years old, down from 78.7 in 2017.While the drop is slight, the factors causing it are significant."This is a large epidemic across the country," says Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, a Deputy Public Health Officer for the County Department of Health and Human Services.Thihalolipavan says the county has already put out health alerts warning people about Fentanyl, a highly potent opioid that can cause a fatal overdose from just a few microscopic particles. They have also received several state and federal grants to buy thousands of doses of Naloxone, a drug used to fight the effects of an opioid overdose.Across the nation, Fentanyl was responsible for 28,466 of the 70,237 overdose-related deaths in 2017.Other grants have paid for the training of medical professionals in the East County, where overdose numbers are higher. They're teaching doctors, nurses and pharmacists about which opioids are safer to prescribe, and in what amount. The hope is the training will help people avoid addiction and dependency, which can lead to abuse.Other health officials are looking at the link between alcohol abuse and suicides.A recent county study showed that the top three areas in San Diego for suicide rates all rank in the top five for the prevalence of alcohol licenses and sales. Richardson believes that shows alcohol's role in people choosing to take their own life."It's a mind-altering drug," he says. The county also has a website, Up2SD.org and a crisis hotline (888-724-7240) set up for anyone who needs help. 2321

San Diego (KGTV)- With no warning, a light pole came crashing down on top of a car in Pacific Beach. Neighbors are worried that what they found could shine a light on a bigger problem. “It’s really scary that you can be walking down the street and something could fall out of the sky like that,” says neighbor Kevin Payne. Payne says he was walking in the area on Saturday, along Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue when he heard the loud crash. He says a San Diego lifeguard, who was driving by, stopped to section off the area until crews arrived. The base of the pole is filled with corrosion and rust. Neighbors say to the human eye it would have been tough to spot. “You wouldn’t notice just walking by, you would need to take off the cover of the base,” says Payne. “I think once you took the cover off it would have been clear as day.”In a statement to 10News, the city didn’t pinpoint the cause of the collapse but says the light is scheduled to be replaced this week. In the meantime, city crews will assess the other lights in the area to ensure they are “functional and stable.” The owner of the damaged car was not inside at the time. The city says she will need to make a claim with the Risk Management Department to determine who is liable. 1259
