SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements.On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings.Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend.The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own. It seems like a lot of the public doesn’t understand; you just have to do that on your own,” Cotus said. 1539

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Callum Wagner rose up among the capacity crowd inside a University City ballroom Monday. He took the stage in front of hundreds, as they gave him a standing ovation."My mom keeps saying it's a big deal," said Callum, 12. "I don't like to talk about it."Callum's mom, Beverly Wagner, says she wouldn't be alive today if not for her son. That's why on Monday, Callum was one of three children honored as 2020 local 9-1-1 for kids heroes. It was July 1, 2019. Beverly had just got out of the jacuzzi in their Alpine home when she said she was feeling ill. Moments later, she was unconscious, suffering cardiac arrest. Callum was the oldest other person home at the time. He called 9-1-1, and Heartland Dispatcher Kim Gonzales picked up. "All I remember hearing him say was, his mom is dead, and at that point, it's go time," Gonzales said. For the next eight minutes waiting for first responders, Gonzalez instructed a desperate Callum how to deliver C.P.R. "She's not breathing," Callum told her on the phone call."It's OK, keep doing 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4," Gonzales responded. It was Callum's first time delivering C.P.R. He did it so well that Beverly made a full recovery, with no brain damage. "He did a great job because he broke my ribs, and that kept me alive," Beverly said. "They said that's a good sign of CPR."Beverly says Callum deserves all the accolades. During the 9-1-1 call, Callum told Gonzales that his mom was going to die. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Cat Kom spent Tuesday morning leading Studio Sweat’s spin and sculpt fusion class, a half-hour of spin, and a half-hour of strength.“It is hard but it feels so good,” Kom said after the session.The other thing adding to her jubilance: the fact that she could finally open her boutique gym's new location in Rancho Bernardo.She said it seems like a long time coming.Kom’s outlook was a lot different when she first spoke to 10News in April in the midst of the coronavirus shut down.She couldn't open her new gym, was still paying rent for the old 4S Ranch location, and, like many small business owners, was shut out from a federal stimulus Paycheck Protection Program loan.“We didn't lay a single person off,” she said at the time. “That was our plan and that's what we hoped to do. Now we're kind of going, oh my gosh I might have to lay people off.”Fast forward to Tuesday. Studio Sweat was in its fifth day of operation after restrictions lifted.Kom ultimately got an ,000 PPP loan and never had to lay anyone off.Still, hours are reduced as membership is only at 65% pre-coronavirus levels and she still owes full rent.“I kind of had these grand dreams that we were going to open up and everybody was going to come back, but that's just not the case,” Kom said.Kom spent a couple of thousand dollars outfitting studio sweat for safety, including more sanitation stations.She says, however, that if there does happen to be a second wave in the future, studio sweat will be more prepared to handle it and rebound faster.The governor's guidelines for gyms to reopen include physical distancing, and for patrons to bring their own towels. 1668

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Armed private security guards - and others with nonlethal ways to defend themselves - could soon patrol iconic San Diego locations like Balboa Park and the downtown Central Library.The city of San Diego is officially seeking proposals from security firms that would authorize armed or enhanced safety personnel outside more than 50 places, including community parks, skate parks, and library branches. The guards could either carry guns or non-lethal weapons, such as mace or hand restraints, depending on the arrangement. The city currently has very few armed guards - mostly stationed around public bathrooms downtown. RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksA firm called Able Patrol and Guard patrols city parks and libraries, However, those guards are unarmed and essentially observe and report. The change comes after guards reported being threatened, spit on, and harassed, namely by a growing homeless population outside the Central Library. The city is now aiming to increase their ability to defend themselves. "The goal of the RFP is to provide the proper level of security for City facilities as determined by City departments."Graham said a San Diego Police expert reviewed the document for technical soundness. He said the police chief would always be notified in the event of armed security dispatched. The city is seeking responses by Sept. 7. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was not available for an interview.
