BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. GUANGZHOU, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Tap water supply was resumed Wednesday in a south China town after a manganese contamination had led to drinking water shortage for 13,000 people since Monday.Local authorities in Lufeng City, Guangdong Provinceon Wednesday installed three temporary pipes to be connected to another local tap water plant that was not affected by manganese, amid efforts to ease drinking water shortage for residents.The city government said the manganese level in the contaminated tap water provided by a local supplier in Da'an town was 1.2 mg per liter since Monday, 12 times the maximum amount allowed in drinking water.The cause of the contamination was still under investigation and environment specialists from Lufeng City were in town to conduct further analysis, said Huang Xianjia, a city government spokesman.According to the safety standards for drinking water, jointly issued by the Ministry of Health and the Standardization Administration in 2007, the maximum manganese level allowed is 0.1 mg in every liter of drinking water.Huang said the contamination was "not serious." "Tap water still appears clear with no odor. It's safe for washing and bathing."But a resident surnamed Wang showed reporters two pails of water he stored on Monday. Dark sediment was seen clearly on the bottom of the pails."It takes time for the mineral to settle and become visible," said Wang.Wang and his neighbors have joined a rush for spring water in mountains near their homes. ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.
