BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed Monday that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government will wage the fight against corruption with greater determination and more forceful measures as the situation remains "grave".Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-graft body, Hu said all work should be done with the fundamental interests of the majority of the people as the core concern.Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said problems that seriously violated the public interest and sparked the most public complaints should be addressed to ensure social justice.He said efforts were needed to strengthen ties between the Party and the people and to enable the people to play a more active role in fighting corruption.Hu pledged to "combat graft strictly and punish corrupt officials severely" so as to win trust from the people.Hu admitted that prominent problems remained in the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government, and warned of a "grave situation and arduous tasks."He called for enhanced supervision and monitoring of the implementation of major central government and Party policies and measures and the promotion of a corruption-free work style among officials.He called for reinforced efforts to build a system to prevent and punish corruption."More efforts should be made to investigate graft in key industries and key posts," he said, stressing the supervision of procedures concerning the promotion of local officials to prevent abuse of power or other corrupt conduct.Figures from the CCDI show 146,517 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations last year, including 5,098 leaders at the county head level or above and 804 officials who were referred for prosecution.Discipline inspection bodies received almost 1.43 million petitions and tip-offs last year and recovered 8.97 billion yuan (1.35 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses for the state."All comrades in the Party must serve the people with all their hearts and use their power to seek benefits for them. MOSCOW, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A handover certificate on China providing Russia with emergency humanitarian aid has been inked in Moscow between the two sides, the Chinese embassy in Russia announced on Thursday.The document was signed by Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui and Vladimir Puchkov, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Russian Emergencies Situations Ministry on Wednesday.On behalf of the Russian government, Puchkov thanked the Chinese government and people for providing aid and support to Russia on the abnormal summer wildfires.Li spoke highly of the close cooperation between China and Russia in recent years on emergency rescue and humanitarian aid, and expressed hope that China could further strengthen cooperation and exchange views with Russia in this regard in the future.The humanitarian aid delivered by the Chinese side on Aug. 20 was worth three million U.S. dollars, including fire extinguishers, compressors, fire-fighting suits and gas masks.Statistics showed that the summer wildfires have cost Russia 15 billion dollars.

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China said on Tuesday it would fulfill its obligations to the UN Convention Against Corruption.He Yong, deputy secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made the remarks at a meeting.He said that China would give priority to fulfilling its binding obligations to the convention and improving its anti-corruption laws and regulations.He also stated that China would advance international cooperation on anti-corruption measures and learn the best international practices to advance China's anti-corruption efforts.The Tuesday meeting reviewed progress China made in fulfilling the UN Convention Against Corruption and outlined plans for the next stage in the battle.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will face the challenge of an aging population over the coming five years and the city has limited experience in dealing with the phenomenon, the Beijing Morning Post reported Saturday.At the end of 2009, registered senior citizens in Beijing numbered 2.27 million, or 18.2 percent of the city's total population of permanent residents, the report said, citing the local government.The city will have a moderately aged society when its aged population reaches 3.24 million in 2015, the report said.Of the city's population of registered senior citizens, 1.94 million, or 85.6 percent, are below the age of 80 years, and 326,000, or 14.4 percent, are above the age of 80 years.In the coming five years, approximately 470,000 senior citizens in Beijing will require nursing.A survey conducted recently by the society and legal system committee of the municipal political consultative conference found that of 4,000-plus respondents, 24.5 percent intended to live in homes for the aged, a level much higher than the 4-percent level the municipal government expected.Some 53.3 percent of respondents said they are willing to spend their twilight years at home. That figure was significantly lower than the 90 percent figure the local government had expected.According to the survey, 99 percent of local citizens born after 1980 said they would not be able to look after their parents during their old age. 

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again called on the relevant parties to make joint efforts to safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press briefing.The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.Hong initially expressed China's stance Wednesday with regard to the exchange of fire between the ROK and the DPRK.On Thursday, Hong again called on parties involved to stay calm and exercise restraint, and urged the ROK and DPRK to engage in dialogue and refrain from similar actions.China has always maintained that the relevant parties resolve disputes through negotiations and by peaceful means and be committed to safeguarding peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.China opposed any acts that harmed the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, he went on."It is very urgent and important to restart the six-party talks at the current stage," Hong said, adding China had maintained close contact with all the parties involved, including the United States.He said China hoped parties involved could make concerted efforts to properly handle their concerns through talks and consultation within the framework of the six-party talks, which involved China, the DPRK, the United States, the ROK, Russia and Japan.China would like to make concerted efforts with all parties to help ease tension, seek peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.With respect to the planned joint military drill between the United States and the ROK in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula from Nov.28 to Dec. 1, Hong said China was concerned."China holds a consistent and clear stance on the issue," Hong said without elaborating.
