Hurricane Lane may have passed by the island chain over the weekend, but Hawaii is still feeling the storm's aftereffects as residents recover from days of heavy rain and remain on the lookout for even more showers.Lane dropped 52.02 inches of rain on Hawaii from August 22-26, the second highest rainfall total from a tropical cyclone in the US since 1950, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service (NWS).That's behind only the 60.58 inches dumped on Nederland, Texas by Hurricane Harvey last year.Hawaii's Big Island -- the easternmost island in the chain -- was hammered hardest by rain. Some residents there had to be evacuated, with water rescues occurring in Hilo and Keaau, the NWS said. A number of roads were closed by flooding and landslides. 782

If you've been looking for a new kitchen appliance this year, locating certain models can be as tough as finding a new Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5.The appliance shortage that began in March shows no sign of letting up.Tommy Conougher is among the many frustrated shoppers. He needs more space in his refrigerator."This is one we've had since we built the house 17 years ago," he said.Like many families during this pandemic, he wants to stock up on frozen beef and chicken."We thought we would just invest in a freezer we would put in the garage, so we started to look."But finding a freezer was tougher than finding Nemo."We have been searching all summer long, nine months, for a freezer," Conougher told us in a Zoom interview from his kitchen."And even when the big box stores have their specials, they don't have them in stock."Many brands, price ranges affectedIt doesn't matter if you are looking for a freezer, refrigerator, range, oven, or washing machine. It also doesn't matter if your budget is 0 or ,000, or what brand you want (though American brands like Whirlpool and Maytag appear to be in better shape than European or Korean brands). You are going to find spot shortages just about everywhere, according to Ken Reiman, co-owner of an appliance distributor. He supplies builders and remodelers, who he says now have to delay finishing some projects due to ongoing shortages."When I check our vendor websites," he said, "they are just not available."He says the shortages that started when factories shut down for two months early in 2020 have not let up."For instance," Reiman explained, "they will give an estimated time of December 5, and December 6 comes around and they have moved to January."Why the shortage hasn't endedReiman says there are 3 reasons for the current shortages.Originally, it was factory shutdowns in March, April and May, along with delays getting appliances shipped from China during that time. The second reason is shortages of foreign-made parts, such as wiring harnesses and compressors, which forces U.S. factories to shut down their assembly lines until product arrives. The third reason is high demand, as people spend their vacation dollars this year on their kitchens instead, Reiman said. His suggestion: Be flexible on brand and model."We have products coming in," he said. "Our warehouses are more stuffed now than ever. But it seems we can't get the full package of matching appliances, which means you may get a range and microwave, but may have to wait three months for the matching fridge."If your heart is set on an exact size, color, and model, he says you could wait till spring.Reiman says your best bet is to ask what models are in the local or regional warehouse that you could get in a few days. While you will find shortages of all appliances, the worst of all are standalone freezers, because not many of them are made.As always, don't waste your money.________________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — One week after San Diego County lifted the beach closure at the Imperial Beach Pier, many people are enjoying the waves. But parts of the coastline remain closed due to the Tijuana River runoff contamination. Nicolas Pasculli of Hillcrest, drove down specifically to Imperial Beach to avoid the weekend crowds.“We’ve had rain for such a long time. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air," Pasculli said. We met him sunbathing on the sand, just south of Seacoast Drive. Compared to some of the other areas in the county, this beach was empty.“Maybe because the sign is up and it says to be careful, the water might be contaminated,” Pasculli said. Bright yellow signs are clearly posted at the entrance of the beach. Last week, San Diego County Environmental Health gave the green light for people to enjoy beaches north of the last house on Southeast Drive in Imperial Beach. But Pasculli was right in the middle of the 'Red zone,' where the county deemed unsafe due to Tijuana sewage contamination since last November. That did not seem to bother him. “The way I look at it, we’re pretty close to that last house, so I think we’re in a gray zone, so I’m not worried about it,” Pasculli said. Surfer Dane Crosby was not phased by the warnings either.“It’s a north swell today, so I know that the water is moving south," he said. The Imperial Beach resident already surfed the waters in the morning. He was at the beach again, walking his dog Dixie.“When it is dirty, you’ll get an essence of detergent, kind of like a peppery detergent smell,” Crosby said. But today, he did not smell anything. Neither did Pasculli. They are both confident that the winds and waves will filter away the contaminants.“I think sometimes people get over anxious about things because we’ve become such a germaphobe society,” Pasculli said. “The ocean is pretty active today, so I think it's going to clean itself out.” 1950

If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number informing you that you've missed jury duty and could be sent to jail if you don't pay a fine, be wary. The call could be a hoax. The scam has claimed a number of victims in the Baltimore area.At least one caller identified himself as a Lieutenant Steven Harris with the Baltimore County Sheriff's office. “They claimed that I had failed to show up, obey a summons in a criminal case, and that the judge had issued a bench warrant for my arrest. And they wanted me to come in right away and straighten it out or they would have to come get me,” said Professor Rena Steinzor who teaches at the University of Maryland Carey Law School. The caller gave the address of the Towson courthouse and instructed her to meet him there with money in hand.“He wanted ,868 in fines for my failure to appear and said I would get the money right back,” said Steinzor. When she explained she couldn't get down to her bank in Capitol Hill and back before the courthouse closed, he told her to purchase a MoneyPak from a CVS or office supply store. The form of payment was a red flag that alerted Steinzor to the fraud.“I think it's stupid to target somebody who's familiar with the criminal justice system and knows that you don't go to CVS and put money on a card if you have to pay a fine in court,” Steinzor said.A co-worker then called the Sheriff's Office who told her it was a trick.Steinzor didn't pay but there are many potential victims. The scheme stretches into areas around the state.Harford, Howard, Cecil, and Frederick counties have all reported similar scams recently. In Frederick County the caller gave the name of a police officer who is actively on the force. They convinced a victim to stay on the phone. The scammer didn't have an accent, they provided real addresses, and they threatened the victim with arrest.“I think the threat that they're going to come and get you is very disconcerting. I mean, I will tell you, I made it all the way to my car,” said Steinzor. The Baltimore County Sheriff said the fraudsster was after the code on the MoneyPak. He would've asked for the code and never appeared at the courthouse. They also said the person in question may be from another country. When police went to investigate, the number Steinzor provided was disconnected.Steinzor wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable. When she initially called the number, the voicemail made it seem like it was the Sheriff's Office. They also knew where she worked. If you get one of these calls and you're not sure, police advise you to hang up and call the agency's official number on their website to verify. You could be fined or face jail time for failing to appear for jury service, however, courts do not call people to notify them about a bench warrant, nor do they instruct them to bring a “bond voucher” with them to the court. For more information on the scam, click here.  2992
