SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USNS Mercy leaves San Diego Friday for a deployment to Asia.The U.S. Navy's hospital ship will take part in a mission called Pacific Partnership, which was created after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The crew’s goal is to provide disaster relief and medical assistance to Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia."Our staff and team have come together to form a dynamic team of professionals and we are ready to execute this mission and engage with our partners throughout the Indo-Pacific," said Capt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is asking for convalescent plasma donations from patients that have recovered from COVID-19. The plasma is used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19. Although not a cure for the virus, the plasma has proved to be effective for some patients. The blood bank says they are running low on convalescent plasma because requests from hospitals have gone up. The process of donating takes a little more than an hour, including the check-in process. To donate plasma you must have had a positive COVID-19 test, recovered from the virus and be symptom free for 28 days. Donations are by appointment only. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This month, thousands will pay tribute to a civil rights icon in one of the nation's largest MLK parades.The 40th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade steps off on Jan. 19, bringing floats, high school bands and drill teams, colleges, churches, and many more to Harbor Drive to honor the work of Dr. King. One witness recalls King, “was very warm … very genuine [and] seemed to be very caring and sincere ... He spoke to me as though I was someone he was very familiar with.”In his CWU speech, King is quoted as saying:"And may I say to you, my friends, that I still have faith in the future. I know these are difficult moments and so many of us are faced with problems day in and day out. And I know that we are still at the bottom of the economic ladder, still the last hired and the first fired.
