"On the whole, we feel our move to partner with Alibaba so far looks like it's the right strategy," Yang said. "It is too early to tell whether we are successful or not." "The best strategy still seems to be Chinese and US companies sharing best practices ¡ª we all benefit." Yahoo is buying New York City-based online advertising exchange Right Media in a move to counter Google's move to acquire the DoubleClick Internet ad-targeting firm. The California online search titan, which owns 20 percent of Right Media, said it will acquire the remaining 80 percent of the company for 680 million dollars (500 million euros) in stock and cash. The ad exchange serves as a place where advertisers can easily "hook-up" with websites or online services that cater to desired customer demographics. While announcing on April 13 that it was buying New York-based DoubleClick for 3.1 billion dollars, Google revealed plans for the Internet ad tracking and targeting firm to create an open exchange similar to Right Media.

Rising sea levels and falling river water volumes - as forecast in the latest UN report on climate change - could drastically alter weather patterns and cause huge economic losses in China, a senior meteorological official warned Thursday.Luo Yong, deputy director of the Beijing Climate Center affiliated to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), said there will be more typhoons, floods and land subsidence as a result of global warming.The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released in Spain last Saturday said "human activities could lead to abrupt or irreversible climate changes and impacts".It said that even if factories were shut down and cars taken off roads, the average sea level will rise up to 140 cm over the next 1,000 years from the pre-industrial period of around 1850.In the next 100 years, it said, sea levels will rise by 18-51 cm.More frequent and heavy floods require China - which has an 18,000-km coastline on the mainland - "to build coastal facilities of higher standard," Luo told a press conference.As coastal regions are economically developed areas, the loss from typhoons and floods will be magnified, Luo said.He also warned that higher sea levels will lead to further land subsidence, which is already being seen in some coastal areas.Another major threat from global warming is water shortage, Luo said.In the past 50 years, the six major rivers in the country have seen their water volumes reduced sharply, especially those in the north, such as the Yellow and Huaihe rivers. Ground water storage has also dropped markedly, he added.The water shortage will take a toll on the farming sector, hurting grain production; and industrial and domestic consumption will be affected, he said.Luo said that China will possibly see more flooding in the north and drought in the south, the reverse of the current weather pattern.Song Dong, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said next month's international talks on global warming in Bali, Indonesia, are expected to focus on greenhouse gas cuts by rich countries and the transfer of more clean technology to developing nations.

"We could all be better off, China on the one hand and the global economy on the other hand," echoed Trichet. Critics argue that China is keeping its currency artificially low, contributing to its massive trade surplus with other countries and undermining competitors' prices. Both Bernanke and Trichet conceded that the cheapness of Chinese products flooding world markets had helped reduce global inflation, although said this was balanced by China's huge appetite for fuel and raw materials -- which has contributed to higher oil prices. Overall, China's impact on global inflation was "modest," Bernanke said. China is one of the world's fastest-growing economies, and its expansion has had a ripple effect on prosperity in other countries and offset more modest growth rates in North America, Europe and Japan. BEIJING -- China's education officials are joining with employment authorities to mount investigations into reports of agencies and individuals who lure minors to work, said the Ministry of Education on Thursday."We have received reports that some agencies and individuals lured minors to work on the pretense of introducing them to part-time jobs or internships," said the ministry in a circular.Education authorities across the country will join with officials who have law enforcement powers in labor departments and commerce and industry administrations to intensify supervision and management to stop illegal employment of minors by agencies and individuals, it said.The ministry asked its local branches and all schools to be aware and report illegal employment to the authorities.Chinese law bans minors under the age of 16 from working and those between 16 and 18 must be given easier and safer work than adult workers.Employers who violate the law can be fined and, if the crime is serious, their business licenses will be withdrawn.In June, private brick kilns in north China's Shanxi Province were found abusing workers, many of whom were underage, in a forced labor scandal.A total of 95 officials in the province have been punished in the wake of the forced labor scandal.The ministry also warned vocational schools not to violate regulations on internships, which ban students from interning during their first year.Most vocational schools in China take in students who finish three years in secondary school, but do not go to high school.In 2004, a private vocational school in southeast China's Jiangxi Province was caught luring first-year students to work full-time in an electronic hardware factory during their summer vacation by promising free tuition.
