BEAVERCREEK, Ore. — Warnings of strong winds that could fan the wildfires on the West Coast have added urgency to firefighters' efforts. The alerts stretch from hard-hit southern Oregon to Northern California and last through Monday evening.Authorities say nearly all the dozens of people reported missing after a devastating blaze in southern Oregon have been accounted for, but the fires have killed 35 people from California to Washington state.Across California, Oregon and Washington nearly 100 wildfires have burned 4.5 million acres of forest. The flames have turned homes into rubble, forced tens of thousands to flee and shrouded the region with smoke so thick that air quality was some of the worst in the world. Many residents were forced to flee their homes on a moment's notice."It gives you a feeling of helplessness, and you don't know who to turn to, and where to go and what to take from the home," Allen Dadour, a California resident, told CNN.President Donald Trump is expected to receive a briefing on the ongoing crisis while in the Sacramento area on Monday. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will deliver remarks regarding the fires and his campaign's environmental policy from his home state of Delaware this afternoon. 1257

BERLIN, Pa. -- A National Guardsman is accused of making threats to kill Vice President Mike Pence before his visit to Pennsylvania for the annual observance of the Flight 93 crash. William Robert Dunbar, 22, of Berlin, Pennsylvania was charged Saturday with disorderly conduct and terroristic threats.According to a criminal complaint filed against Dunbar, he was on duty at the U.S. Army National Guard Training center in Richland Township when he said, “If someone pays me enough money, I will kill the vice president.”Witnesses said they contacted commanding officers after they heard Dunbar threaten to "kill" or "murder" the vice president on at least two separate occasions. The witnesses told police they were "fearful" of the threats Dunbar made and contacted their commanding officer immediately. Police said Dunbar was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for evaluation and then released into the custody of Richland Police. He is being held in the county prison in lieu of 0,000 bond.  1035

Better known as “Hollywood,” William Difonzo, Jr. was accused of punching and killing a man at a bar in Lake Worth, Florida in February 2017.Prosecutors announced Friday they have dropped the manslaughter charge against Difonzo, 27, citing lack of evidence, in the wake of him claiming “Stand Your Ground.”Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Difonzo on June 26, claiming he fatally punched Sebastian Paz in the face at the suburban Lake Worth bar. Deputies say the altercation began when one of Paz’s friends tried saying hello to Difonzo in the parking lot of the bar, but Difonzo was upset and told the man to go away. A woman told the man to go inside because “Difonzo tends to be problematic,” the report states. The man went inside the bar, but shortly thereafter went back outside to smoke. Difonzo moved towards the man in the parking lot, clenching his fist. Paz jumped in between the two, looking to stop a potential fight.A second witness told investigators Paz “had his arms crossed invading Difonzo’s personal space” as an argument broke out between the men.Difonzo punched Paz hard in the face, according to the arrest report. Paz fell straight back onto the asphalt in the parking lock, hitting his head on a concrete parking stop. He immediately started bleeding from his mouth and nose.Difonzo left the scene right away, according to a detective’s notes.“Paz didn’t deserve to die,” a woman who witnessed the punch told investigators.Paz was declared deceased the next morning in the hospital. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s office determined Paz’s cause of death was blunt force trauma and ruled the manner of death as a homicide. Four months later, Difonzo was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.Difonzo’s attorney Steven Bell said those witness’ stories changed once people were called into deposition. “All eyewitnesses have testified that they either did not see how the fight began or that Mr. Paz was the initial aggressor and [Difonzo] acted in self-defense,” Bell said. That’s why Bell says in December he filed a motion to dismiss the manslaughter charge against Difonzo based on statutory immunity, better known as the “Stand Your Ground” defense. In the motion, Bell cited a change in Florida law in June 2017 that shifts the burden of proof from the defense to the state. “It is now the state’s burden to show by clear and convincing evidence that [Difonzo] did not act in self-defense,” Bell wrote.  A hearing on the stand your ground defense was scheduled for March 26.Just days before, prosecutors announced they would no longer prosecute Difonzo on the manslaughter charge on Friday. Prosecutors said in court documents that “although there was probable cause to make an arrest, the evidence cannot prove all legally required elements of the crime alleged and is insufficient to support a criminal prosecution.”“It was dismissed because he stood his ground, he defended himself,” Bell told WPTV. “He was essentially cornered outside of a bar”But, he remains behind bars at the Palm Beach County Jail. Court records show Difonzo pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license in a crash that killed one of his passengers in Jan. 2013. He was sentenced to three years in prison and two years probation, which was scheduled to end on May 3. His license was suspended in 2011 for driving under the influence, records state. In addition to the manslaughter charge, Difonzo was charged with violating his probation for getting arrested. He was also charged with testing positive for drugs and not reporting to his probation officer from Jan. 2017 until the time of his arrest in June.Several court documents report Difonzo as a known gang member. On Monday, Difonzo pleaded guilty to violating his probation by testing positive for drugs and absconding from justice. The violation charge for his manslaughter arrest was dropped. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for three and a half years he has already spent behind bars. Bell had asked the judge to sentence him to time served.“I respect the judge’s decision, but it’s not what he wanted,” Bell said.Bell said he was relieved for Difonzo and Difonzo’s family when he learned the state had dropped the manslaughter charge.“He was innocent so he was properly nolle prossed and dismissed.” Bell said Difonzo would have claimed “Stand Your Ground” even under the original rules of the law.Difonzo could have faced 15 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter, according to Bell.Former Palm Beach Gardens police officer Nouman Raja has also filed a "Stand Your Ground" motion to dismiss the manslaughter and attempted murder charges against him in the death of Corey Jones. A hearing will take place on Wednesday. 4826

BRANSON, Mo. — Branson, Missouri is a tourist destination for tens of thousands of families every summer. The winter months bring colder temperatures and empty amusement parks, meaning high unemployment across the community. This year, COVID-19 has made the widespread seasonal poverty even worse.Kevin Huddleston runs the Christian Action Ministries Food Bank in Branson and helps feed thousands of families per year. He said this year, they've handed out twice the amount of food as they did last year because so many families have been financially struggling through the pandemic.Huddleston said the need for services has fluctuated throughout the year, skyrocketing at times and leveling out when the stimulus checks and expanded unemployment benefits kicked in. With winter on the horizon, he is worried for what is to come."I really am concerned that we are entering our season of highest demand, and typically, normally people enter this period of time with some stored back, they have some money set aside, some food set aside, to get them through the dark days of winter when our tourism season is dormant here. We don’t have that fallback this year, people are not prepared," said Huddleston. He is also worried that the community, without a homeless shelter or affordable housing units, will see more community members on the streets than ever before."I think we’re likely going to see a housing problem this winter, seeing more people being homeless situationally, so we as a community are scrambling trying to do something."The city is opening up a warming center for people to have somewhere to go to escape the frigid temperatures, but it is not an overnight place yet. Huddleston is hoping a homeless shelter will be able to open up soon.Despite the adversity families are facing across this tourist town, Huddleston said he does have hope."Our financial contributions have been very good this year, much better than we’ve expected in this kind of economic situation," he said, adding that their shelves are often overstocked. Thankfully, food supply has not been an issue. The food bank has been able to help thousands without ever running out.Still, he says handing out food does not fix the problem. He and other community leaders said poverty in Branson needs to be addressed at the root. He is part of a group helping to build resources in the community so families can work themselves out of a constant situation of struggle. However, he is worried these solutions will not come quick enough."We are planning for a very dire situation this winter," he said. "We are going to practice as if that’s going to happen, and if it doesn’t, we’ll be blessed." 2680

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has been sentenced to serve five years in prison after being convicted of illegal poaching in a decades-old case, prosecutors said Thursday.Bhawani Singh, a public prosecutor working on the case, told reporters outside the court that Khan can appeal the decision to a higher court. If Khan's appeal is accepted, he could be granted bail or have his sentence suspended.Khan, one of India's most recognizable and bankable actors, was found guilty of killing two blackbucks, a type of antelope found in the country, while working on a film in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan in the 1998. He was also fined 10,000 Indian rupees (0).Prosecutors alleged that the 52-year-old shot the two blackbucks while out driving with some of his co-stars.Khan pleaded not guilty and has long maintained his innocence as the case has languished in legal limbo over the years. Khan's lawyers said he was carrying an air gun, which cannot be used for hunting an antelope. The other actors, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam Kothari, were charged with abetting a crime but were acquitted Thursday, Singh said.Khan has long been known as one of Bollywood's bad boys and has been in trouble with the law before. In 2015 he was found guilty in a deadly hit in run accident and received a five-year prison sentence. A higher court later tossed the conviction, claiming the evidence presented was not sufficient. His trial has generated significant media coverage throughout India, with many of the country's news channels giving his case wall-to-wall coverage. The son of Indian screenwriter Salim Khan, Salman Khan made his movie debut in 1988, and his career took off shortly after.Today he's considered one of India's biggest celebrities -- to the point where he's often mobbed whenever seen in public -- and despite his brushes with the law, is still one of Bollywood's biggest draws.Khan has more than 32 million followers on Twitter and another 15.3 million on Instagram.Forbes ranked him 71st in their list of the world's highest paid celebrities and the ninth-highest paid actor, estimating he raked in million in 2017. Fellow Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, at number 8 on the list, is the only Indian actor to have earned more than him last year.  2307
