SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of opening fire on U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the border Monday has been named.San Diego Police say 23-year-old Travis James Eckstein, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a shootout with CBP officers Monday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Eckstein was driving from Mexico into the U.S. and refused to stop for officers. Officers say Eckstein tried to drive through an inspection area, before a vehicle blocked his exit.He then began to fire on officers before he exited his vehicle continued shooting. He said he was driving back home to Chula Vista from Mexico on Monday evening. Moments after he cleared customs, he said he saw a white truck blaze past him. He immediately saw CBP agents throw out spike strips on the ground and the driver of the truck crash into another vehicle. Seconds after two separate shootouts, our viewer saw agents dragging Eckstein onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, other officers were pointing their guns at the bullet-ridden truck, addressing the passengers. Two male Chinese nationals, ages 18 and 27, were found in the rear of Eckstein's truck and were interviewed and released to CBP officials.First responders attempted life-saving measures on Eckstein, but he did not survive his injuries.Seven CBP officers were involved in the shooting but, miraculously, none were injured.“The CBP officers risked their own lives to protect the public from this gunman,” Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations, said in a release. “Human smuggling is always dangerous. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of the newly passed California Prop 17, which restores the right to vote to felons on parole, believe the vote outcome may help improve public safety.For the first time in some three decades, Mancy Thompson, 56, was allowed to cast a vote in a presidential election, recently sending in his mail-in ballot from his La Mesa home."Elated. I felt like,'Yes!'" said Thompson.For decades, the answer had been "no."In 1987, high on cocaine and heroin, the active-duty Marine shot and killed a bystander during a bar fight in Oceanside. After pleading guilty and serving more than 23 years in prison, he was released on parole in 2011.He graduated from a reentry program at the local nonprofit Second Chance, and has held down jobs ever since, including positions at the nonprofit. He was on parole for seven years and not legally allowed to vote."If I am disenfranchised, I'm no longer connected. I don't have value to myself, family or community, because they don't have to listen to you," said Thompson.When he got off parole, his right to vote was restored. That right that will now be granted to some 50,000 state parolees, thanks to the passage of Prop 17.Thompson says it can help remove the stigma of the past."Now I have a right to be heard and participle in the democratic process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The debate over whether controversial guest speakers should be invited to a summit on reparations at San Diego State University re-erupted Wednesday after several protesters at a rally in favor of the invitations used anti-Semitic tropes that some witnesses called hate speech."We're all open to objective research on any given topic," Professor Risa Levitt told 10News. "But when hate speech enters the dialogue at a university that touts itself as being a leader in openness, acceptance, and diversity, then I think you do run into a problem."In 2019, the university agreed to fund a summit organized by students to explore the issues of reparations and slavery. One name floated as a potential speaker was Ava Muhammad, a spokesperson for the Nation of Islam who has been accused of anti-Semitism. When her name was suggested, a video was circulated showing her refer to Jews as "parasites" who taught Americans how to oppress freed slaves after the Civil War. When professors spoke out to suggest her invitation would be a mistake, the university said Muhammad would no longer be considered, explaining that the students in charge of the summit had decided she would not be invited.Wednesday's protest was held by the African People's Socialist Party and did not, according to organizers, include SDSU students as speakers, although one professor did speak.
