As Republicans on Monday hit the leaders of major cities helmed by Democrats for their handling of the unrest in the US this summer, thousands took to the streets following the shooting of Jacob Blake.Blake was shot seven times by Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officers on Sunday. Video showed Blake walking into a car when he was shot from behind. As many key details from Sunday’s incident are still not confirmed, Kenosha Police announced that two of the officers involved have been placed on leave. The incident prompted further unrest in a number of US cities on Monday, calling for justice. Supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement also are calling for the arrest of the officers involved in Blake’s shooting.Meanwhile, Republicans tried to pin the unrest and protests that turned violent on Democrats during Monday's portion of the Republican National Convention. The unrest ramped up following the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day. While most of the largest US cities are run by Democrats, unrest has also played out in large cities run by Republicans, including Fort Worth and Jacksonville. To illustrate their point, Republicans called on St. Louis attorneys Mark and Patricia McCloskey, who were criminally charged after video shared on social media indicated that the McCloskeys pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in their gated community."Whether it's the defunding of police, ending cash bails so criminals can be released back out on the streets the same day to riot again, or encouraging anarchy and chaos on our streets, it seems as if the Democrats no longer view the government's job as protecting honest citizens from criminals, but rather protecting criminals from honest citizens,” Mark McCloskey said. “Not a single person in the out of control mob you saw at our house was charged with a crime. But you know who was? We were. They actually charged us with felonies for daring to defend our home."The theme continued by other GOP speakers.“Rioters must not be allowed to destroy our cities,” Kimberly Guilfoyle, National Chair, Trump Victory Finance Committee, said. Some speakers during the Republican Convention claimed that Democrats are supportive of defunding the police. While some members of the Black Lives Matter protest have embraced a “defund the police” movement, Democratic president candidate Joe Biden said he does not support defunding the police. 2409

AUSTIN, Texas — For Brett Hagler, the co-founder of non-profit New Story, building homes for people without adequate shelter is nothing new."We get a large piece of land and work with families that have been living in shacks or tents without shelter and design a totally new community with the families.”Approximately one billion of the world’s population is without proper shelter. To make a dent in that he says, they have to think outside the mold.“We believe traditional ways cannot get us there.”So for New Story’s next endeavor—adding more communities to the land they’ve already acquired in El Salvador—they teamed up with a brand new startup. That’s where Evan Loomis comes in. He’s the co-founder of Austin, Texas-based Icon, a company focused on new technologies for building homes.Their first big debut came at this year’s South by Southwest festival in their hometown.“This is a gigantic robot,” Loomis says, gesturing toward a large steel frame on wheels. “[It] really does some amazing things. Down to the millimeter it knows exactly where to place building materials.”In this case that material is a proprietary mixture of concrete, that pours out of a nozzle on the underside of the metalwork. And the machine moves along a computerized map to create a house.“This is basically the first permitted 3D printed house in the United States,” he said.“We have to invest in [research and design],” Hagler said. “[We asked ourselves] ‘how do we get a breakthrough in cost, speed, and quality?’ And that’s how we landed upon 3D-home printing. The excitement in the air is palpable as they walk us through and around this modest home built up of about 100 one-inch thick concrete layers.“It’s stronger than regular cinder block,” Hagler said. It also comes at a fraction of the cost of a regular house. This model had a price tag of about ,000 but they hope to get the price down to ,000.“We can build in a fraction of the time [compared to traditional construction methods], and it can have a higher quality, strength, and sustainability for the environment."It was 'printed' in just 48 hours. Eventually, they say it will be done in just a half day. It’s a small but open floor plan — with no physical doors — and rooms are separated by partial walls made up of the printed concrete. They say they’ll easily be able to customize different designs. The prototype home can fit a family of four or five.“If you’re coming from a tent or shack and you move into this,” Hagler said, “it’s a significant life-changing difference.”One of the things they’re most excited about with their upcoming 3D-homes project in El Salvador is the fact that they’re introducing groundbreaking technology to the people who usually see tech advances last.“We are actually bringing them the future -- which is robotic construction of housing — first,” Hagler said. “And they’re really excited about that.”They say they plan to begin construction in El Salvador before the end of the year with the hopes of finishing their first community of homes by early 2019. There could one day be plans for 3D printed homes in some of the poorest areas of the United States as well, Loomis said, but he has his eye set on possibly expanding to terrain that’s literally out of this world.“It could be a really great solution for making space habitation a lot more achievable,” Loomis said. “We hit a nerve with this technology, and we are going to hit the gas hard and try to take it to everybody now.” 3528

ATLANTA, GA. – The prevalence of adult obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC said Thursday that its 2019 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps show that 12 states now have an obesity prevalence at or above 35%. Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. This is up from nine states in 2018 and six states in 2017.The data also shows that racial and ethnic disparities still persist across the nation.A total of 34 states and Washington D.C. had an obesity prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic Black adults, 15 states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among Hispanic adults, and six states had a prevalence of 35% or higher among non-Hispanic white adults.Addressing the prevalence of obesity in America is more important than ever, because the CDC says obese adults are at heightened risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19. It increases the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death. The CDC says obesity also disproportionately impacts some racial and ethnic minority groups who are also at increased risk of COVID-19.“These disparities underscore the need to remove barriers to healthy living and ensure that communities support a healthy, active lifestyle for all,” wrote the CDC in a press release. While system and environment changes can take time, officials say Americans can take small steps now to maintain or improve their health and protect themselves during the pandemic.“Being active and eating a healthy diet can support optimal immune function and help prevent or manage chronic diseases that worsen outcomes from COVID-19,” the CDC wrote. “These actions, as well as getting enough sleep and finding healthy ways to cope with stress can help with weight maintenance and improve overall health.” 1934
