ZHENGZHOU, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities began Sunday relocating the first batch of rural residents totaling 10,600 in central Henan Province to make way for one of the three routes of the country's massive South-to-North Water Diversion Project.     The residents in Xichuan County will move to 10 newly-built villages in 10 different counties of Henan, and the project is expected to be finished by Sept. 10, according to the relocation plan designed by the Henan Provincial Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.     They need to move away from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, a water control pivot along the middle route of the diversion project, as the reservoir dam is being heightened to hold more water and ensure water supply for the diversion project, the plan said.     "I am happy to move to a new, larger home," said Zhang Faxiang, whose family was transferred to a new village in Xuchang County Sunday.     He said concrete roads were built in the new village, which are not commonly seen in central and western Chinese villages. The local government has provided tap water, methane gas for them and built primary schools, recreation centers and other public facilities.     According to the relocation plan, more than 320,000 people in Henan and neighboring Hubei Province will move away from the Danjiangkou Reservoir. Hubei authorities plan to relocate 12,000 people this year.     The South-to-North Water Diversion Project, one of the world's largest water project, is an effort to divert water from China's rainy south to its dry north. It has three routes: the eastern, middle and western ones.     The State Council, China's highest governing body, approved the ambitious project in December 2002 after a half century of debate.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Monday with Speaker Luka Bebic of the Croatian Assembly, vowing to facilitate closer parliamentary exchanges and cooperation between both countries.     "China highly values its relations with Crotia, and regards the country as a reliable good friend and partner in southeast Europe," Wu told Bebic in Beijing. He vowed joint efforts with the country to cement bilateral exchanges in all fields to build better future for both sides. Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), hailed the progress of bilateral ties since the forging of diplomatic ties 17 years ago, citing frequent high-level visits, remarkable trade cooperation and increasing exchanges in cultural, technological and educational areas. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's crude steel output would surely top 500 million tonnes this year, said Luo Bingsheng, vice chairman of China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) on Saturday.     In the first half, China produce 266.58 million tonnes of crude steel, up 1.23 percent over the same period last year. In June alone, the daily output was about 1.65 million tonnes on average.     Compared with an increasing production capacity, the country's steel enterprises saw declining profits and revenues in the first six months amid low steel prices resulted from weaken market demands.     According to statistics covered 71 of China's large-scale steel producers, total business revenue of them dropped 28.07 percent year on year to 955 billion yuan (139.82 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half. Profit decreased by 98.32 percent to 1.73 billion yuan.     China produced 500 million tonnes of crude steel last year, accounting for 38 percent of the world total production volume.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 -- Automobile sales in China may accelerate 28 percent from a year ago to reach 12 million vehicles this year and overtake the number of autos sold in the United States, according to a regulatory official.    The remark was made by Chen Bin, chief director of the industry coordination department of the National Development and Reform Commission, at a conference in Tianjin on Saturday.     In contrast, General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co forecast sales in US will be about 10.5 million units this year, Bloomberg News said.     Auto sales in China in the first half reached 6.09 million units, a rise of 17.7 percent from a year ago, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.     The government's stimulus measures have boosted the auto industry and demand which is set to stay robust, Chen said. The measures included a 50 percent cut in the purchase tax to 5 percent on vehicles equipped with engines of less than 1.6 liters.
