"We imprinted the Olympic history book with a unique Chinese stamp."     Hu asked the Chinese people to sum up the treasured experience in organizing the excellent Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and promote innovation in governance and management.     "We should further free our mind, take bolder steps in the process of reform and make more innovations," Hu said.     Hu emphasized that the success of hosting the great Olympics was achieved after a disastrous earthquake hit Sichuan Province on May 12.     "No hardship could ever stop the courageous Chinese nation," Hu said, adding that the Beijing Olympics showcased China's advantage of mobilizing collective wisdom and strength of the nation in carrying out significant missions. The State Council also decided to award the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) and the Hong Kong sub committee for the Olympic equestrian competition.     BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, representatives from athletes, volunteers, organizers, security workers and the armed forces also spoke at the meeting.     Xia Geng, mayor of the Olympic co-hosting city Qingdao, Liu Chunhong, Olympic weight-lifting gold medalist and other volunteer and organizer representatives also gave speeches at the meeting.

BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday said the medical treatment and epidemic prevention tasks in the quake regions were still tough and no relaxation would be allowed.     Presiding over a quake relief meeting here, Wen urged bolstering the treatment of the injured to minimize fatalities and disability. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao speaks during the quake relief meeting in Beijing on Monday, June 9, 2008. He stressed that the medical treatment and epidemic prevention tasks in the quake regions were still tough and no relaxation would be allowed.He urged local governments to resume as soon as possible the prevention and control of endemics and health supervision systems, strengthening epidemic surveillance and reporting, and enhancing the supervision of drinking water and food safety.     He said that normal medical services should also be restored as soon as possible to guarantee the basic medical need of quake victims.     Under concerted efforts from relevant sides, the epidemic prevention work was progressing in a forceful, orderly and effective way, Wen said. All affected people in all counties, towns, villages and temporary settlements had been covered.     No concentrated epidemic outbreaks or emergent public health incidents had been reported, according to the meeting.     The 8.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the southwestern Sichuan Province and neighboring regions, including the northwestern Gansu and Shaanxi provinces on May 12. As of Monday noon, it had taken 69,142 lives, injured 374,065 people, left 17,551 missing and 46.25 million affected.     The meeting was also briefed on the quake relief work in Gansu and Shaanxi, which also suffered great losses.     It directed the two provinces to resume production in the affected areas at the earliest date possible and to rehabilitate the infrastructure.     The central government would provide support in policies, capital and material, the meeting said.

  

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Qatar Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasim Bin Jabir Al-Thani here on Thursday. The two sides agreed to step up bilateral friendly and cooperative relations.     Wen hailed the development of bilateral ties on the basis of respect, equality and mutual benefits over the past 20 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties. He expressed China's appreciation of Qatar's adherence to the one-China policy. He will also attend the Boao Forum for Asia on April 12.

  

XIANGFEN, Shanxi, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers continued to search for the missing in last Monday's fatal mud-rock flow in north China's Shanxi Province that killed 254 people and injured 34 to date.     No new bodies were found from 6 p.m. on Sunday to 6 p.m. on Monday. Rescuers were continuing to search in areas designated by the family members of the missing, according to Lian Zhendong, the rescue operation's chief.     "We will not stop the rescue work in a short time," he said. "We will do our best to make the family members of the missing see their relatives." Rescue workers work on the ruins at the key spot of the mud-rock flow in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, north China's Shanxi Province, Sept. 15, 2008A rain-triggered mud-rock flow happened around 7:50 a.m. on Sept. 8 when the bank of a pond holding waste ore dregs burst at the Tashan Mine in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, destroying buildings, trade markets and residences lying about 500 meters downstream.     The death toll has risen to 254, 151 of whom have been identified. The 34 injured, four seriously, were being treated in hospital.     An initial investigation showed that factors leading to the accident included the production and building of the pond was in violation of regulations. The mine also lacked a security checkup, failed to implement the orders for straightening up operations, in addition to the loose supervision of concerned safety departments.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, has ordered a nationwide safety check at similar production sites to root out hidden risks following the deadly accident.
