BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi pledged Sunday China will continue to cooperate with other countries to address global challenges in the coming new year.     "China will continue to work with the rest of the international community to tackle various global challenges with full confidence and jointly advance world peace and development," said Yang at a new year reception held by the Foreign Ministry for foreign diplomats and officials of international organizations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China holds a New Year reception for foreign envoys and guests in China, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 20, 2009.He said the year 2010 will be crucial for the recovery of the global economy, the reform of the international system and China's efforts to ensure stability and promote development.     "We will work to maintain steady and relatively fast economic growth, and at the same time speed up the transformation of the economic development pattern so that our effort on these two fronts will reinforce each other," Yang said.     He said China will remain committed to the path of peaceful development and the win-win strategy of opening-up, and pursue development that is peaceful, open and cooperative. Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo (2nd R) and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi (1st L) toast with a foreign guest during a New Year reception held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 20, 2009. Yang told reporters at the reception the Shanghai World Expo is one of the major tasks of China's diplomatic work in 2010.     He said he would like to take the reception as an opportunity to promote the expo to the international community and invite overseas people to visit China during the event next year.     In his speech, Nolana Ta Ama, dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Togo's ambassador to China, said as China plays an increasingly important role on the international stage, it will continue to devote itself to the world affairs in 2010.     Over 400 people, including China's State Councilor Dai Bingguo, attended the reception.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- In order to deal with climate change, efforts should be made simultaneously in fields of politics, economy, society, culture and ecology, a senior Chinese official told Xinhua.     Only through this comprehensive approach can lead to the forming of a systematic framework against climate change and push forward the harmonious and sustainable development between human and nature," said Zhao Baige, vice minister of China's National Population and Family Planning Commission.     With the efforts of all countries in recent years, great progress has been made in fighting climate change. But obvious shortcomings existed, Zhao said.     In the past, much attention was paid to carbon dioxide emissions, but little was given to their correlation with population development, she said. In addition, the roles of politics, culture and society have often been neglected, she added.     Zhao said it is a complicated and huge systematic project to deal with climate change, involving different sectors.     With regard to politics, she said all governments must attach great importance to climate change and honor their commitments. A body should be established to coordinate departments involved, while a long-term plan and a legal framework for climate change should be established.     On economy, Zhao said, "it is impossible to deal with climate change without economic support." She suggested developing countries follow a path of sustainable development when they push forward economic development.     At present, China is on its way of adjusting its industrial structure, setting carbon emission cut targets, strengthening technical innovation, raising energy efficiency and rapidly developing renewable energy.     In the social sector, Zhao said a comprehensive review over the impact of climate change is needed. The principle of equity and fairness should be introduced and a low-carbon consumption mode should be encouraged.     Zhao said a lot of efforts are needed in the sector of culture.     Thousands of years ago, Chinese started to believe that mankind should live in harmony with the nature, said Zhao, adding that China's traditional culture emphasizes the unity of personal rights and responsibilities.     However, she pointed out that in Western countries, personal rights are "over emphasized" while collective responsibilities are neglected.     In fact, China has formed a long-term low-carbon consumption behavior, while over consumption and luxury consumption widely exist in the West, said the Chinese official.     As for the sector of ecology, Zhao said climate change and ecology are interrelated. In recent years, China has adopted a series of measures including developing ecological agriculture, raising land utilization efficiency, saving water resources and reducing pollution.     Zhao stressed the importance of the interrelationship between the five above-mentioned fields, saying that only with a clear political direction, correct strategy and policy measures, can a country put carbon reduction targets into practice and adopt a low-carbon path.

BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's premium income hit 936.09 billion yuan (137.1 billion U.S. dollars) in the first 10 months, according to China Insurance Regulatory Commission.     The figure represented an increase of 78 billon yuan, or 9.09 percent, over that in the first nine months.     During January to October period, premium of property and casualty insurance was 243.18 billion yuan, and 692.9 billion yuan, respectively.     Total asset of the country's insurance sector stood at 3.83 trillion yuan by the end of October.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 -- Premier Wen Jiabao Monday rejected "unfair" calls from European countries for faster reform of China's currency policies, despite lobbying from EU financial chiefs at the weekend."Some countries demand the yuan's appreciation while practicing various trade protectionism against China. It's unfair and actually limits China's development," Wen told reporters in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.     European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, were also at the press conference. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivers a speech at the closing ceremony of the fifth China-EU Business Summit in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, Nov. 30, 2009.    Wen's unusually direct response followed a one-and-a-half hour summit between China and the EU, which has 27 member-nations. The summit ended with five agreements mainly on energy and environmental cooperation.     But it also ended without a breakthrough on issues that have brought stalemate between the sides, such as trade disputes and arms embargoes.     Wen said China will keep the yuan basically stable and carry out currency reform at its own, gradual pace.     A stable yuan is not only good for the Chinese economy but the world, Wen said.     The meeting took place against the backdrop of concern about the rising euro and the possibility it might derail the recovery in Europe, which imports heavily from China.     The yuan began gaining against major currencies after a set of exchange rate reforms were introduced in July 2005. After rising nearly 20 percent against the US dollar, it hovered around 6.83 to the US dollar for about a year. In the past month or so, the euro has risen to a 15-month high.     Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker joined other European leaders in lobbying China's senior officials.     The Chinese officials explained that it was difficult to make a case for "immediate renminbi appreciation" in a country where 40 million people live on less than 1 U.S. dollar a day. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C), European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso (R) and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt (L), whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, meet with the press after the 12th China-EU summit in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, Nov. 30, 2009. The failure of the EU appeal was expected because Europe was only thinking about itself, claimed Wu Baiyi, a European studies expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.     Zhao Junjie, Wu's colleague, said that while China is not able to quickly change its currency policy, Beijing had made efforts in the past year to fill the EU trade gap.     "Actually, some of the goods bought by the dozen purchasing groups that China sent to the EU during the past year were bought only for the sake of the EU," he said. "But the EU still wants more."     Glenn Maguire, chief Asia-Pacific economist at Societe Generale SA in Hong Kong, told Bloomberg: "China will only adjust on its own terms and in its own time. It's decided that now is not the time to do that."     Despite lingering disputes, including trade protectionism and the EU's ban on the transfer of technology to China, Wen Monday raised expectations for improved relations with Beijing's largest trading partner.     "China and Europe walking together hand-in-hand will make the steps of humankind more steady, and that best illustrates the strategic significance of our ties," said Wen.     Barroso and other EU leaders Monday also applauded fresh Chinese commitments on countering climate change.     Stanley Crossick, founding chairman of the European Policy Centre, said Europe will need to commit to lifting its arms embargo against China.     "Beijing is right that listing China among a handful of embargoed pariah states is totally inconsistent with the treatment of a strategic partner," he said.     Crossick suggested that EU officials be trained in contemporary China and taught Mandarin.     Wen opened the door to better understanding Monday, announcing that 2011 will be the year for China-EU youth communication and the establishment of other youth and cultural exchange mechanisms.

CHENGDU, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged designated provinces and municipalities to contribute more to the reconstruction work in quake-hit areas in the southwestern Sichuan Province.     Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection to Sichuan on Jan. 2-4. Zhou Yongkang (3rd L), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, talks with residents at Qianjin Village in Anxian County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Jan. 3, 2010. Zhou Yongkang made an inspection tour in Sichuan Province on Jan. 2-4. "After the quake, all designated provinces and municipalities moved quickly to send money and personnel for the reconstruction of infrastructure and projects concerning local people's livelihood. They have made significant contribution," Zhou said.     Zhou visited officials and workers from the eastern Shandong Province, who were there to help with the reconstruction at the new seat of Beichuan County, and urged them to build a new county with ethnic characteristics and modern elements.     While visiting Yingxiu Town in the Wenchuan County, Zhou told local officials to focus on the livelihood of local residents during reconstruction.     The quake on May 12 in 2008, measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale and up to 11 in terms of intensity, left nearly 80,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless.
