There’s a big buzz at Joshua Tree National Park.“The bees were actually quite aggressive to the point where it scared my kids to go to the restrooms,” said Warren Hahn who recently visited the park from Orange County, California.That’s right, swarms of honeybees, so aggressive that several of the park’s campgrounds were recently closed for people’s safety.“When we close the campgrounds, it’s a way for us to limit the interactions between the bees and our visitors,” said park ranger Ian Chadwick.Chadwick says the bees are so desperate for water and shade in the California high desert that thousands of them will seek moisture anywhere, including some unusual places.“Our bathrooms that have a lot of good shade,” he said. “Water isn’t plentiful in the desert and our toilets here actually do not have any running water.”After studying these species of bees for decades, scientists now say this problem is linked to worsening weather.“The reason it is a problem now and it wasn’t a problem 10-15 years ago is because of climate change and the increased aridity,” said Cameron Barrows, Ph.D., a research ecologist with the University of California Riverside.Barrows says temperatures have been rising in deserts at alarming rates.In Southern California’s Mojave Desert, where July averages a high of 100 degrees and less than a quarter inch of rain, this problem could sting for years to come.“There’s more bees coming in all the time,” Barrows said. “So, it’s an ongoing maintenance issue. It’s not just a one time and you’re done.”Despite the increase in activity, Chadwick says the number of reported bee stings is normal for this time of year.While a bee sting may be painful, Chadwick said losing the bees would hurt the environment even more. 1761

There has been no phone call between President-elect Joe Biden and President Donald Trump. There has been no concession from the commander-in-chief either. America is currently enduring one of the most turbulent transitions in recent memory. So what is not happening that should be during this non-traditional transition? NO SIGN-OFF ON TRANSITIONWhile Biden has held events with signs like "The Office of the President-elect" behind him, technically the office has not been activated by the General Services Administration. It may sound like an obscure government agency, but the office is responsible for unlocking funds and access for the president-elect. Without the GSA starting the transition, Biden can't telephone current members of the executive branch and receive confidential briefings from them. He doesn't have access to taxpayer funds to begin the background check process for some appointees. SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS The implications go beyond the lack of a photograph between Biden and Trump in the White House. The last time the United States experienced a delayed transition was in 2000 because of the Florida Recount. The 9/11 Commission, following the September 11th attacks, put some blame on the transition because it prevented President George W. Bush from putting some national security advisers in key positions in a timely manner. Congressional Democrats have sent a letter asking GSA administrator Emily Murphy to brief Congress on why the transition has not begun. 1503

TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - According to a Tijuana newspaper, a power outage over the course of last weekend at the Tijuana General Hospital led to the deaths of five patients who were on ventilators. Officials, though, deny it.On Wednesday, ABC10 News spoke media partner Televisa's anchor Estephania Báez about the report from newspaper Zeta. “What they got was interviews with doctors but they remained [anonymous]," said Báez.She said that state authorities and the hospital admitted there were five deaths but denied that they were caused by the outage and claimed that a backup generator kicked in but only at low voltage.Televisa is reporting that copper wire thieves are suspected of causing the loss of power. “The thieves that [steal] the copper from homes decided to do it to the General Hospital and I can’t even think about why they did this with knowing that patients are connected to ventilators,” added Báez.Tijuana's General Hospital has been hit hard since the start of the pandemic. There have been reports of a lack of beds and equipment. More recently, Báez said, there have been problems related to accessing cancer care. “They even had lots of families that have children with cancer protesting outside the hospital because they couldn't even get their treatment done,” she added.In part of a statement to ABC10 News, the hospital wrote that it categorically denies that the outage resulted in the death of any of its patients.ABC10 News reached out to the Joint Commission which oversees safety standards for hospitals in the United States to ask about power outage protocols. We were sent the following."The Joint Commission Emergency Management Standard EM.02.02.09 EP 5 requires that hospitals identify an alternative means for providing "fuel required for building operations, generators, and essential transport services that the hospital would typically provide." The facility should assess how it would be affected if outside emergency support could not be obtained for 96 hours. This does not mean that they need to have 96 hours’ worth of fuel on site. The plan could include memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with suppliers to replenish fuel as needed during the emergency period. Additionally, the plan could be to operate without normal branch of power to reduce fuel consumption, to extend run-time of the available fuel. If the generator is used as the backup power source for the life safety branch of the electrical system, the facility should have enough fuel to run the generator for a least 1-1/2 hours for as long as the building is occupied." 2592
