SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. It will remain open through next week.RELATED: Dangerous heat set to sweep through San Diego CountyVisitors to the zone, located at 565 Broadway, are required to wear a face covering while inside and may bring one personal bag.There will be seating available and movies playing. Each area will be disinfected between uses. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to approve million in aid for businesses affected by San Diego County's slide into the most-restrictive purple tier of the state's four-tiered coronavirus monitoring system.Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher, co-chairs of the County of San Diego's COVID-19 Subcommittee, proposed making million in general funds available to provide relief to businesses negatively impacted by the indoor closures mandated by the purple tier."Due to the massive spike in COVID-19 cases and very concerning increases in hospitalizations we have to take action to slow the spread in San Diego County," they said in a joint statement. "Through no fault of their own, COVID-19 highest risk entities have to stop indoor operations. While we know this step is vital to help slow the spread in our community, we want to step up and help those impacted..."Our goal for the million is to provide relief to restaurants, gyms and other entities that have been directly impacted by the indoor closures due to our county's purple tier status. "Hay Heroes can choose the amount of their monthly commitment. When feeding 58 equines, no gift is too small. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch.
