SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced Wednesday that three more people died from complications from the flu bringing the county's death toll this season to 49.The deceased were described as an 84-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, and a 50-year-old woman from East County, according to County of San Diego Communications Office spokesperson Jose A. Alvarez.All three had underlying medical conditions.“Influenza activity in the region is still elevated. People should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The flu vaccine is safe and effective.”This season's death toll is far lower than last season. 307 San Diegans died from complications from the flu through this time last year.The number of people with influenza-like symptoms who showed up at local emergency departments went up one percentage point last week, reaching 6 percent again.The flu claimed the county's first young victim Feb. 20. A 14-year-old girl became the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego. The girl had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.The majority of cases have been of the H1N1 virus, the county says, which typically affects younger and middle-aged adults because they have not been exposed as much as older adults.County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions."Due to continued elevated influenza activity in the county, Wooten is extending—until April 30—the order for unvaccinated health care personnel to wear a mask while they’re in patient care areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Recent rains have caused sewage-contaminated runoff to enter ocean water along Imperial Beach, San Diego County health officials announced Friday.An existing water contact closure of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge coastline has been expanded to include all of Imperial Beach's coast, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.Due to recent rainfall, county health officials said sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana River entered the Tijuana Estuary. Water samples and observations caused officials to believe the contamination has reached ocean water in the South Bay.Signs and warnings have been placed in the area until water samples indicate the ocean is safe for recreational use once again.RELATED COVERAGE: 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer Monday signed an executive order that will allow certain businesses and places of worship to operate outdoors.In light of California’s restrictions on indoor operations and activities, the executive order will permit businesses such as gyms, churches, barbershops and hair/nail salons to “expand their operations into private parking lots,” City of San Diego officials said.The order takes effect immediately, although Faulconer said the state will have to amend its regulations for salons and barbershops to operate outside.Faulconer said, “Right now, we need to give our small businesses every tool possible to get through this difficult time or they might shut down for good. By allowing more and more businesses to operate outdoors, we are delivering solutions to help San Diego’s small businesses get to the other side of this pandemic while putting thousands of San Diegans back to work safely and responsibly with proper physical distancing.”The San Diego City Council will vote on the newest executive order into a city ordinance at a later date.On July 13, Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rain runoff has prompted a warning for swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers in San Diego County.As showers move through the area, urban rain runoff may force large amounts of bacteria to wash into coastal waters, including San Diego Bay and Mission Bay, county officials warned Saturday.Any activities in coastal waters should be avoided for 72 hours following rainfall. Depending on the intensity of the storm, elevated bacteria levels could persist.With recent rains also bring a water contact closure for Imperial Beach's shoreline, due to runoff from the Tijuana River. The closure area includes the beach-line from the south end of Seacoast Drive to the International Border.The access road to Friendship Park, within Border Field State Park, may also be affected by river runoff.Signs have been posted warning of the water closure. 861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Loyal SC announced Thursday they will be wearing a Black Lives Matter alternate kit for the team's first game and for other selected games through 2021.The uniform is all black with dark teal accent and the phrase “Together San Diego” will run down the side of the jersey. Player nameplates will spell out "Black Lives Matters" across the back standing in solidarity with the national-turned-global movement against racism and injustice towards people of color.The team's first game is Saturday in Utah.The organization's goal in aligning itself with the BLM movement is to promote inclusivity and diversity in the community, according to team President Warren Smith."Loyal is more than just our name -- it's our mantra," Smith said. "The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community, and now more than ever we stand by this.
