SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Friday on Interstate 5 at the southern end of Balboa Park.The traffic fatality occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, near state Route 163 in downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.It was unclear why the pedestrian, who died at the scene, was on the interstate, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.The fatality left three northbound lanes blocked in the area and tangled traffic for miles through late morning. 544

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police.The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person was found dead Tuesday morning in the Sunset Cliffs area, police said.Emergency personnel responding to a report of a person down near Ladera Street found the body around 6:30 a.m., San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The identity of the deceased and details regarding the circumstances of the fatality were not immediately available.Personnel from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene and an autopsy will be done to determine the cause and manner of death.There were no indications of any suspicious circumstances in connection with the death, Hernandez said. 653

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was slashed in the face with a knife by a family member during a fight at Ski Beach Sunday, police said.The family was gathered at the beach when an uninvited family member showed up about 2:35 p.m. Sunday, according to Officer S. Foster of the San Diego Police Department.A 31-year-old man got into a fight with another family member, who pulled a knife and slashed him below his right eye, Foster said.The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities asked the public to keep an eye out for a missing Lemon Grove teenager with a history of running away from home.The last known sighting of Alonna Wintland, 15, was on July 31, when she left her home in the 8000 block of Lemon Grove Way in a car driven by an unidentified man, according to sheriff's officials.At the time, Alonna, who did not take her cellphone or debit card with her when she disappeared, was wearing beige shorts, a white shirt and sandals. Her whereabout since have been unknown.Alonna is white, 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 235 pounds.
