BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will carry out the House Sale Price Statistical Scheme in 2011, after soliciting opinions via the internet earlier this year, said Ma Jiantang, head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday.Ma made the remarks at a national statistics work conference, saying the bureau had accepted suggestions from various departments and experts and would work steadily reform the method of calculating the country's house sale prices in 2011."We'll further work with real estate departments, make full use of their network data, and check the authenticity of the data to further push forward the statistical scheme reform," Ma said.The NBS was committed to improve the scheme at the beginning of the year. It released the draft plan on September 25, which said prices, floor areas, and sales of newly-constructed houses in 35 major cities would be based upon data from local real estate departments, instead of independent research.Ma said that the bureau is working on 4 key systems, including building a database for basic surveyed units, one set of standards for surveyed enterprises, data collecting and processing software systems, and direct reporting network systems."The four systems are aimed to guarantee the authenticity, integrity and timeliness of the data," he said.By 2012, above-scale enterprises, above-norm wholesale and retail accommodations and catering businesses, construction enterprises, and real estate enterprises will be able to submit their data directly to a national data center, said the NBS.Also, about 550 cities across the country will use personal digital assistants (PDA) to collect data for the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, as well as farm produce prices, by the end of 2012, the NBS said.

PETERSBURG, Russia, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong stopped by the St. Petersburg 652 primary and middle school on Sunday, speaking highly of the school 's efforts to promote Sino-Russian cultural exchange.Liu appreciated the school's achievements in Chinese language teaching, as the school has been teaching Chinese as the first foreign language for 53 years.Language is a bridge between different nations, Liu said. NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave more names of those massacred by Japanese aggressors more than 70 years ago in Nanjing.After extension, the "wailing wall", a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator Zhu Chengshan said.The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair and extension to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre.The original wall was 43 meters long and 3.5 meters high. The extension will lengthen the wall by 26.5 meters, with 1,655 more names added to it, according to Zhu.Nanjing Massacre happened during World War II after Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then capital of China, on Dec. 13, 1937. More than 300,000 Chinese were killed in the month-long atrocity.To collect the names of the victims is an important but tough job in the research of the massacre, as it is hard to seek witnesses and related documents decades after the holocaust, said Zhu.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Sunday ordered traffic police nationwide to prepare for possible traffic disruptions caused by a lingering cold snap.The cold weather that has stopped traffic on national highways in several central and southern provinces since New Year's Day is likely to last ten more days.At a national meeting on coping with traffic disruptions during the cold snap, vice public security minister Huang Ming said local traffic police should be prepared to control and solve traffic problems that icy weather and sleet might cause.Further, local traffic police should make realistic emergency plans, prepare emergency supplies and equipment for de-icing and removing snow, and quickly handle traffic accidents, he said.He added that road closures should be the last choice in handling poor road conditions caused by freezing weather. Additionally, local traffic police should take other measures such as temporarily opening roads to ensure traffic flows.The recent inclement weather is a reminder of the disastrous freezing winter at the beginning of 2008, which stopped traffic, damaged power grids, and disrupted lives of millions in southern China.However, experts believe China is unlikely to suffer similar conditions this winter because of inadequate moisture.
