(KGTV) -- A North San Diego County couple said they were promised plane tickets for an extremely low price, but when they paid up, they were left with nothing. Robert, who declined to use his last name, loves to travel with his fiancé. In October, he said they got an invitation in the mail to listen to a timeshare presentation.“If you [go], you’re offered one of several gifts—a cruise, a TV, an iPad, and so forth,” Robert said.They decided to check it out, although they knew they just wanted the gift. Instead of receiving tickets, Robert said he instead got more paperwork to enter another program. “You have to sign up [on] a website and then you have to pay to get discounted tickets,” Robert said. “We’re like, what’s going on? These are not free tickets.”The return address on the envelope he received came from “My Ultimate Getaway.” According to the pamphlet, it said: “In order to keep your promotional vacation reserved for a full year, you must register and submit your vacation request for online.” It also asked for a “booking fee of .95.”Robert told Team 10 there was no mention of signing up for a program to get these plane tickets and said “100 percent” they were told it was free.The couple felt misled. They complained to the Better Business Bureau out of Virginia where My Ultimate Getaway has a listed address. Team 10 spoke to another woman from Kansas who said she also gave money with the promise of plane tickets.“We wrote the check for to this Getaway place September the 14th,” said Kathy, who did not want to use her last name. Instead of plane tickets, she “finally got something in the mail. They wanted more money.” BBB records show the man behind My Ultimate Getaway and another similar business called Hot Promotional Vacations out of Maryland is Charles Colvin, also known as Charles Colvin Lemley. A search of state records found Charles Lemley listed as president of My Ultimate Getaway and owner of Hot Promotional Vacations. Robert said he emailed Colvin and showed Team 10 an email where he responded “he would be refunded as soon as possible.” That was mid-January. “We’ve been patient,” Robert said. When Team 10 questioned Colvin regarding My Ultimate Getaway, he responded via email: “We provide gift incentives to companies to market their products or services, nothing more.” He blamed the companies for giving “a false impression that these gifts are free.”When pressed on who the companies are and why he is doing business with them if they are giving a “false impression” to customers, he did not answer that question.Colvin told Team 10 in an email on February 20th that he processed the refund and the couple would “receive it in a couple of days.” After Team 10 got involved, Robert said they received their refund Feb. 26. Robert regrets opening that first piece of mail and hopes to stop others from making his mistake. “If you promise something, please give the customer what they want,” he said. “They get nothing in return except headaches.”The Better Business Bureau suggests when dealing with vacation or travel: Be wary of “great deals” and low- priced offers. Be suspicious of companies that require you to wait at least 60 days before taking your trip. Ask detailed questions. Get all information in writing before you agree to buy. Don’t give your credit card number or bank information over the phone unless you have confidence in the company you are dealing with. Don’t send money by messenger or overnight mail. (CNN) -- Teen clothing retailer Forever 21 is preparing for a potential bankruptcy filing, according to several published reports.Forever 21, which is privately held, has more than 800 stores in 57 countries. And while many retailers have been paring back their network of stores in recent years, Forever 21 was adding stores as recently as 2016. It still has as many stores as it reported at that time.The ability to get out of leases and close stores at a lower cost is one of the advantages that the bankruptcy process affords to retailers.The company did not respond to requests for comment.Traditional brick-and-mortar retailers that specialize in selling clothes to teens and young adults have had a particularly hard time in recent years as younger buyers shift from mall visits to online purchases.Among the retailers in the segment that filed for bankruptcy and closed all their stores during the last five years are Wet Seal, American Apparel and Delia's. Aeropostale also filed for bankruptcy in 2016 but has kept some of its stores open.Many retailers have run into trouble due to being purchased by private equity firms or hedge funds. (KGTV) — As fair season gets underway, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns attendees to practice safe hygiene at petting zoos and around animals.Animals in exhibits can can incredibly educational and fun, but can also put visitors at risk of various germs that can make people sick, including E. Coli and salmonella. From 2010-2015, the CDC said about 100 outbreaks were reported linked to animals in public settings like fairs, zoos, and farms.If interacting with animals — such as feeding, holding, or petting — or touching exhibit areas, guests should wash their hands afterward. Even if visitors don't interact with any animals, germs can still be spread from surfaces around exhibits.Running water and soap are best to use, but if not available, the CDC recommends using an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. If gloves are worn, the CDC still recommends washing hands afterward.Especially at fairgrounds, food can find its way into animal exhibit areas. The CDC warns that visitors should not eat or drink around animals or their living areas. Food shouldn't be shared with animals and visitors should not eat or drink any raw, or unpateurized products.For parents, always supervise children around animals. Children 5 years old and younger should not have any contact with reptiles, amphibians, or live poultry because those animals are more likely to make them sick, according to the CDC.Parents should also leave strollers, toys, pacifiers, and cups outside animal exhibit areas.
