TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Members of a migrant caravan started to meet some local resistance as they continued to arrive by the hundreds in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where a group of residents clashed with migrants camped out by the U.S. border fence.About 100 migrants declined offers of rides to shelters and had camped out late Wednesday by the steel border fence at Tijuana's beach area, when a similar number of local residents marched up to the group shouting, "You're not welcome," and, "Get out!"Police kept the two sides apart.Vladimir Cruz, a migrant from El Salvador, said Thursday, "These people are the racists, because 95 percent of people here support us.""It is just this little group that doesn't support us," Cruz said. "They are uncomfortable because we're here."Playas de Tijuana, as the area is known, is an upper-middle-class enclave, and residents appeared worried about crime and sanitation. One protester shouted, "This isn't about discrimination, it is about safety!"There are real questions about how the city of Tijuana will manage to handle the migrant caravans working their way up through Mexico, and which may total 10,000 people in all."No city in the world is prepared to receive this number of migrants," said Mario Osuna, the Tijuana city social development director. TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- A small piece of fabric kept near a classroom door could help protect students in the event of an active shooter. It was three months ago that kindergarten teacher Tiffany Parker was sitting on her living room floor cutting up a fire hose. "One fire hose makes about 100-110 sections, and I had three hoses donated," said Parker, who teaches at Tonganoxie Elementary School in Kansas.Parker used to be the volleyball coach at Tonganoxie High School. She would use old fire hoses to line her practice drills. Now, the fire hose is keeping her classroom safe and secure when it's not just a drill. "We've always done the typical, you know, cover your window, lock your door, move away, but that never seemed to give us enough security," said Parker. On February 14, 2018, 17 students were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. "You know, seeing my kids' faces when they were first told, 'OK, if somebody comes in, here's what we're going to do,' before I had the Safety Sleeve, and they were still a little fearful," said Parker. Now, in her classroom of 21 students, Parker keeps the 6-inch piece of fire hose hanging by a magnet near the top of her classroom door. In a matter of seconds, the "Safety Sleeve" can be in place."All you do with it is you place it over the door hanger arm, as far as it will go and then they can't get in the door, it won't open," said Parker. The day after the Parkland shooting, Parker brought the Safety Sleeve into her classroom at Tonganoxie Elementary School. After showing her students how it works, Parker said her students felt more secure. "There was such a sense of relief and a sense of security by my kids and a sense of, 'OK, this isn't going to be it,'" said Parker. Parker presented the DIY device to her school principal. Now, she's made hundreds of them for the entire Tonganoxie School District. While she's created a low-cost safety device, Parker said she has no plans to make any money off of the Safety Sleeve. "So many people have asked me, 'Are you going to patent it? You should sell it.' I am not looking to make a dime on kids' lives," said Parker. California, Ohio and South Dakota have already picked up on the idea. The emergency from an engine failure appeared to have shattered a window on the plane. And what was most dire was that a female passenger was being sucked into the hole left by the broken glass.In those tumultuous moments with oxygen masks dangling down the cabin and passengers screaming as they struggled to save the woman, none of the panic came through in the voice of a pilot on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380.Tammie Jo Shults' name has not been officially released by Southwest Airlines, but passengers who were on the flight have identified her as the pilot. Many of them are praising her for how she handled the emergency Tuesday.In air traffic control audio, a female pilot spoke calmly and slowly, describing the emergency that was unraveling more than 30,000 feet in the air -- all the while trying to land a damaged plane suffering engine failure."We have a part of the aircraft missing," she told air traffic control.As they spoke briefly about the emergency landing the plane would have to make in Philadelphia, she asked matter-of-factly: "Could you have the medical meet us there on the runway as well? We've got injured passengers."Air traffic control responded: "Injured passengers, OK. And is your airplane physically on fire?""No, it's not on fire," she replied. "But part of it is missing. They said there's a hole and that someone went out."The air traffic controller responded: "Um, I'm sorry. You said there was a hole and somebody went out? Brace for landing."It was a rough landing, he said, and things were still so chaotic that he wasn't sure if the plane was going to crash."It was just all incredibly traumatic, and finally when we ... came to a halt, of course, the entire crowd was (in) tears and people crying and we were just thankful to be alive," Martinez said.Kathy Farnan, a passenger said that the crew knew what they were doing and kept everyone calm."The pilot was a veteran of the Navy," Farnan told CNN. "She had 32 years in -- a woman. And she was very good."When it was all over, the pilot came out of the cabin and hugged everyone, telling them, "You all did a great job. You did a very good job," said passenger Amy Serafini.They not only praised her technical skills, but her professionalism after they landed.Passengers told CNN affiliate WPVI that she walked through the aisle and talked with passengers to make sure they were all right.Another passenger, Alfred Tumlinson told WPVI: "She has nerves of steel. That lady, I applaud her. I'm going to send her a Christmas card, I'm going to tell you that, with a gift certificate for getting me on the ground. There’s been a significant bounce back in the U.S. job market, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest monthly unemployment report. In June, 4.8 million people were able to go back to work.Businesses in hospitality and leisure added 2.1 million jobs. Food services and drinking establishments added 1.5 million jobs, while retail saw 740,000 workers return to work.“The job market bounced back pretty strongly in June, but we have to keep everything into perspective,” said Ryan Sweet, an economist and Head of Monetary Policy and Research for Moody’s Analytics.Sweet says compared to where the U.S. was prior to the pandemic, jobs are still down by roughly 15 million.Economists, like Sweet, believe the job rebound seen in June is likely over, and the U.S. job market will likely reflect a lull in July.“The lull, it is unclear how long that will last,” Sweet said. “We are hoping until the end of this year.”As coronavirus cases continue to surge in the U.S., the hope for just a lull dwindles and worry about another decline in employment grows.Companies like United and American airlines are already signaling major job loss could come in the near future. Both companies recently reported they may have to each layoff 25,000 workers. Analysts predict if other airlines have to do the same, the industry could lose up to 250,000 jobs.That’s hundreds of thousands of potential jobs lost in just one industry, and many others are signaling a similar situation.“The ones that I am most nervous about are state and local governments because it seems that there is less urgency for lawmakers to pass fiscal stimulus,” said Sweet. “If we don’t get another round of fiscal stimulus, this lull is going to turn into a contraction.”Congress has been talking for two months about another stimulus package, but there is no clear signal that one will come in time. 1881
