An online Good Samaritan challenge that's gone viral prompted two Michigan brothers to offer free lawn mowing to people who can't easily do it themselves.Now, the nationwide challenge's organizer is headed to metro Detroit to recognize their efforts.16-year-old Sam and 13-year-old Hunter have mowed 51 lawns in Westland for free since April. They get prizes along the way, and once they hit 50 lawns, Rodney hits the road; he’s making his way to Michigan Friday to offer Hunter and Sam not only thanks but a lawnmower, weed wacker and blower.Sam and Hunter’s parents follow Rodney on social media and put the word out that the boys were in.It didn’t take long before they were getting requests.“A lot of neighbors actually were advocating for neighbors they had, that they knew that couldn’t do it. So it was really cool to see the amount of community that came out. The boys have actually made what we think are going to be long-lasting relationships with some of these that don’t have contact with the outside world," their mom Keri told WXYZ.Fifty other kids from around the country have also completed the challenge, and about 1,000 are in the process of doing it now.“It’s just great. Especially when things kind of hit, a lot of the activities they weren’t able to do anymore. We couldn’t play baseball, we couldn’t go out to school, we couldn’t have activities to actually do," said their dad, Kyle.They may be helping others, but the boys said they're getting something really important out of the work too.“It’s heartwarming. An online predator who WPIX first exposed six months ago is still prowling the internet, targeting middle aged women.WPIX was contacted last month by his latest victim. She is too frightened to reveal her identity but she wants to tell her story as a warning to others.She met him a few months ago on Tagged, one of many dating sites that are free to join. He told her his name was Kevin Brown. He also calls himself "Big Daddy."Those are the same names he used in January, when WPIX first reported about his scam, sometimes called catfishing. In that incident, he used the dating site POF (Plenty of Fish) and scammed the woman out of more than 0.As reported then, WPIX learned the man is a career criminal. His real name is Kevin Beamon. He’s served 21 years in prison for attempted kidnapping, robbery, and grand larceny.Released just three years ago, he now scams trusting women on dating sites, gaining their trust, then asking for money.With this latest victim, after seeing her profile on Tagged, he reached out, said he liked her picture and began romancing her with frequent texts and phone calls and posting pictures of himself with his mother, friends, and his dog.“He seemed sincere. He seemed honest. He’s very good at what he does and I’m too trusting," she said.He told her he was an NYPD officer and asked her to come with him on a boat trip with some of his fellow cop friends. She said yes, but was surprised when he then told her he was short on cash and asked her to wire him 0 for her ticket. She did.Soon he asked for 5 to buy her ticket to see "Pretty Woman" on Broadway for his upcoming birthday. It was only when he requested 0 to help buy food for adult daughter, that she began to get suspicious.“I said I don’t have it and he said he’d have to find some other way and he abruptly hung up on me,” she said.Still, she agreed to meet him at what he said was his condo in Jersey City the day of the supposed boat ride. She says the place seemed as if no one was living there.He then told her it was his friend’s place, then said it belonged to his sister. When she asked about the dog picture online, her told her there was no dog and he didn’t have any details about the boat tripShe suspected something was wrong,“I said 'this is a farce. You’re lying. I want my money back.' He said 'I don’t have your money.' I said 'well I gotta go.'”She says when she stood up from the dining room table and began to walk toward the door, “I had on a denim shirt and he grabbed the sleeve and started to pull on my arm. I started to scream ‘let me go, let me go’, but he wouldn’t let go.“She grabbed a bottle of Windex on the kitchen counter and sprayed it in his eyes."He loosened his grip and I was able to get away.”She ran out the door, jumped in her car, and drove around the block, where the stopped and called the Jersey City Police Department.Two officers arrived and questioned each of them separately. Apparently, Beamon told them that they were outside and she had never been inside the condo. She says she could have proven that’s a lie by describing the inside of the apartment, but the police never asked.He also said Beamon reeked of Windex, another indication she was telling the truth.She says the male police officer told her to cut her losses since she hadn’t lost that much money and suggested she drop the whole thing. His female partner told her this was a bad part of New Jersey and she should leave and never come back again.“I wanted them to take him into the precinct for questioning, “ she says, but that didn’t happen. When she got home, still shaking from fright, she posted Beamon’s picture on another internet dating site as a warning. Someone told her they’d seen the guy on WPIX.She found our report online and says she felt embarrassed and ashamed she too had fallen for his scam. But she also feels relieved.“I didn’t know if I was going to die," she said. As health system budgets continue to recover from deep losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, questions are being raised about why hospitals with billions in reserves still received hundreds of millions of dollars through taxpayer bailouts.As part of the CARES Act in April, the federal government infused billions of dollars into the economy, with much of the money going to hospitals across the country.“The CARES Act basically said hospitals had to apply for money and had to demonstrate need,” said Robert Berenson, a fellow at the Urban Institute. “That was completely ignored under the pressure to get the money out the door.”According to COVID Stimulus Watch, Beaumont Health System received more than 3,377,370 while McLaren Health System took in 6,502,427. Henry Ford Health System reports receiving 0,538,048 through the CARES Act. Spectrum Health collected 9,000,000.According to the health systems’ most recent quarterly financial filings, each had billions in cash and investment reserves.At the end of March, Beaumont reported .05 billion in cash and investments, McLaren had .18 billion and Henry Ford had .25 billion.Spectrum Health, based in Grand Rapids, reported the most: .2 billion in cash and investments — enough to run the health system for 246 days.Berenson, who studies healthcare costs, said the vast revenues should have been utilized, at least in part, to offset costs that were shouldered by taxpayers.“What’s the purpose for not-for-profit hospitals to have large surpluses, other than for this kind of an emergency?” he said.Without question, all of the hospitals saw significant losses in revenue due to elective procedures being canceled and increased expenses in security and scarce personal protective equipment.Each of the health systems stresses that while they appreciate the federal grants, they will not cover all of their losses.Beaumont, McLaren and Spectrum all declined on camera interviews, but Henry Ford’s Health System CFO Robin Damschroder agreed to an interview."It was critical for us to be able to pay payroll, buy pharmaceuticals, pay our utility bills," Damschroder, who leads the Michigan-based system said. "If we didn’t have those accelerated loans, we would have been going out on our credit lines very, very quickly in an effort to keep everything moving."Damschroder estimated the hospital will have lost 0 million due to the pandemic, and is bracing for a second wave to slash revenues further.“We’re anticipating a wave two. We are unclear given the amount of money that’s been given out today whether there will be more money,” Damschroder said. “So if the second wave were as big as the first, or half of the first, you can imagine that Henry Ford is going to have to look to those reserves then.”Grants to hospitals weren’t based on need, but rather on past revenues. It prioritized large health providers first, and smaller, more rural hospitals last.North Ottawa Community Health System in Grand Haven, Michigan, a small hospital with under 500 employees, was struggling well before the pandemic and was late to receive any federal funds after it took hold.“It has shown the light about the inequities of hospital funding,” said Jennifer VanSkiver, chief communications officer for the health system.In total, the health system received .2 million through the CARES Act, not enough to offset .7 million in losses.“With smaller hospitals,” VanSkiver said, “you don’t typically have huge cash reserves or the ability to forever rely on investment income.”Niall Brennan, the CEO of the Healthcare Cost Institute in Washington, doesn’t blame Michigan hospitals for accepting the federal funds because they all lost significant revenues. Back in April, he said, no one knew if the surge of COVID-19 patients would last weeks or months.But where he does fault hospitals is for accepting federal funds and still furloughing or laying off employees. Beaumont furloughed nearly 2,500. Henry Ford furloughed 2,800.McLaren and Spectrum also furloughed employees, but the final numbers were not publicized. Both released statements."McLaren has taken decisive action to stabilize its operations and protect its financial strength during the pandemic," said spokesman Kevin Tompkins in an e-mail."We’ve focused our resources, reduced expenses and boosted our liquidity to ensure we have adequate cash on hand to support normal operations and the increase in COVID-19-related cash obligations that will extend well into 2021. Unfortunately, this pandemic is far from over," he said."The financial impact of COVID-19 is far-reaching and will suppress our health system’s revenues for the remainder of the year, which will end in a loss," said Spectrum Health spokesman Bruce Rossman. "This makes financial adjustments imperative. The most difficult adjustment involved the furloughing of team members and the elimination of positions that would not be needed in the future. These were roles that did not involve direct patient care."Beaumont did not release a statement..“Maybe a CFO can look at the bottom line and say look, we’re not utilizing these people and therefore they need to be furloughed,” Brennan said. “But this was an extraordinary time for our country, and if an organization could afford to keep their workers paid, I think they should have made every effort to do so.”Each of the hospitals said furloughs were necessary to ensure they’d survive longer than just the next year.
