SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine killed in a motorcycle crash on I-15 Friday has been identified as 21-year-old Logan Parkhurst.The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Miramar Way just after 6:30 a.m.According to the California Highway Patrol, Parkhurst hit the back of a Toyota while attempting to exit onto Miramar Way, causing him to be ejected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that a majority of San Diegans decide to move to the region before landing a job. According to Apartment List, more than 65 percent of San Diego metro renters are location-first movers who chose to move to the area prior to searching for a job. The report also shows that only 32 percent of San Diego renters plan to settle down in the area long-term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan that has the potential to triple Mission Valley's population by 2050 will be voted on by the San Diego City Council Tuesday.The city will vote on the final draft of the proposed Mission Valley Community Plan. It replaces the last plan that was written back in 1985. Supporters say it will help address the region's housing crisis. "One of the biggest problems we've had in the city is our community plans haven't been updated in decades. So, whenever developers come in and want to build housing they have to get conditional use permits and that takes sometimes over years to get accomplished, and that drives the cost of housing up," said councilman Scott Sherman whose district includes Mission Valley.Currently, Mission Valley is zoned mixed-use and residential. The new plan would rezone it to almost all mixed-use. Developers would be able to build up to 145 housing units per acre, instead of 73 units per acre. "Apartments and condos, density around mass transit, that's the whole idea, we need housing so let's make it more dense around transit oriented hubs, cause we have the trolley that runs right through Mission Valley," said Sherman. People who work in Mission Valley are worried that traffic will be a nightmare in an area already known for gridlock. "It's already congested as it is, so to build more, where?" asked Eni O'Donnell. "It depends on how well they plan integrating it all in, if you bring in 50,000 people overnight, then obviously, that's not going to work," said Archie Kordestani who lives in Civita. The plan includes several new bike and pedestrian bridges, connectors to help with traffic, and more transit stops along the trolley's green line. "Busing, biking, trolleys, I think these are the ways to go," said Kordestani.The project also includes 160 acres of park space and two schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Carlos woman says a buzzing sound caught her off guard at home. When she looked around, she spotted a drone hovering near her bedroom window, peering in.  Yvette Skalka was hanging her laundry in the backyard on September 6 when she heard the noise. She says she looked up and a small, white drone. “It hovered for a good 3 to 5 minutes.  It gave me an uneasy feeling. It didn’t feel right,” said Skalka.The drone flew up to the top of a palm on the property for a few minutes, before flying back down.“It was near three dogs and driving them crazy, like it was tormenting them,” said Skalka.Eventually, the drone flew off.  Skalka filed a police report and posted details on the Nextdoor app.  Another neighbor responded that she believed the same drone has recently hovered near her ground-floor bedroom, watching her college-age daughter.  That family also filed a police report. 956

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A powerful new public service campaign called "End Family Fire" launched Wednesday by the Brady Center for Gun Violence Prevention aims to promote awareness for gun safety in the home. The center says eight children are hurt or killed in a firearm accident every single day in the United States. Carol Landale with the Brady Center says the goal of the campaign is to show people that something can be done. According to the center, more than four and a half million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns, and three in four know where the guns in their home are stored.The term, “Family Fire” was developed specifically for this campaign and refers to a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home that results in death or injury.The Brady Center’s goal is to introduce “Family Fire” into the vocabulary of the American public, much like "Designate a Driver" and "Secondhand Smoke Kills" became powerful and effective slogans for their respective causes.  1071
