ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing, local civil affairs authorities said Tuesday afternoon.Some 1,243 people have been rescued, Tian Baozhong, head of the provincial civil affairs department, told a news conference.Of them, 58 who were seriously injured had been hospitalized, Ma Chengyang, deputy director of the provincial publicity department, told another press briefing Tuesday night.Torrential rain on Saturday night prompted an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu early Sunday morning, ripping many houses off their foundations and tearing multi-story apartment buildings in half.The mud-rock flow has leveled an area of about 5 km long, 300 meters wide and 5 meters deep in the county seat with more than 2 million cubic meters of mud and rocks, severely damaging power, telecommunication and water supply facilities.About 45,000 residents have been evacuated, as mudslides have destroyed more than 300 homes and damaged another 700. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - Flooding was temporarily eased on the Yangtze River as the Three Gorges Dam on China's longest river saw water levels slightly down from its crest stage, the nation's flood control authority said Saturday.The water level at the dam fell to 158.54 meters as of 8 a.m. Saturday, 0.32 meters lower than its highest level of 158.86 meters which took place on Friday morning, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief HeadquartersThe water was flowing from the upper stream of the river at 31,000 cubic meters per second, said the office in a statement on its website.However, the water level was still 13.54 meters above the alarm level and is expected to increase again due to rainfall and water inflows from tributaries in the upper stream, the statement said.The office warned that the water level at the dam is very likely to exceed the historical level, if it rises again.Some of the country's other major rivers were also witnessing water levels surpassing their warning levels, including the Jialing River, Hanjiang River and Huaihe River, the statement said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province that began July 23.He ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to be well-prepared for "more serious floods and disasters" .Floods in China this year have left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of Friday, according to the flood control office.

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 600 soldiers with the Lanzhou Military Area Command have arrived at mudslides-devastated Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province, and started relief work.Three other detachments consisting of more than 1,700 soldiers with the command as well as a 180-member medical team are on their way to the affected areas.Six helicopters, including four from the Lanzhou command and two from the Xinjiang Military Area Command, have also departed for the affected areas.China's armed police have also sent 2,100 members to help with the relief work, with 740 of them having arrived at the scene.
