The Senate is expected to pass a bill Tuesday to fund the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund through 2090, permanently compensating individuals who were injured during the 2001 terrorist attacks and its aftermath rescuing people and removing debris under hazardous conditions.The House passed the bill earlier this month and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it.Comedian Jon Stewart and surviving first responders including John Feal pushed Congress to pass the extension before rewards diminished and the fund expired in 2020.In the face of dwindling resources and a surge in claims, the fund's administrator announced in February that it would need to significantly reduce its awards. Special Master Rupa Bhattacharyya said the fund received over 19,000 compensation forms from 2011 to 2016 and almost 20,000 more from 2016 to 2018 in part due to an increased rate of serious illnesses.The original fund from 2001 to 2004 distributed over billion to compensate the families of over 2,880 people who died on 9/11 and 2,680 individuals who were injured, according to the Justice Department. In 2011, Congress reactivated the fund and in 2015 reauthorized it for another five years, appropriating .4 billion to aid thousands more people. The fund was set to stop taking new claims in December 2020.The new bill would extend the expiration date for decades and cost what is deemed necessary. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it will cost about billion over the next decade. Last week, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, delayed the bill's passage, criticizing Congress for not offsetting its cost by not cutting government spending elsewhere.The bill is named after James Zadroga, Luis Alvarez and Ray Pfeifer, two New York police detectives and a firefighter who responded to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and died due to health complications attributed to their work at Ground Zero. 1921

The US Food and Drug Administration has received 127 reports of seizures or other neurological symptoms possibly related to e-cigarettes, the agency announced Wednesday. Investigators have yet to determine, however, whether vaping was directly linked to the cases."The FDA is continuing its scientific investigation to determine if there's a direct relationship between the use of e-cigarettes and a risk of seizure or other neurological symptoms," said Dr. Ned Sharpless, the acting FDA commissioner.The FDA said the reported cases occurred between 2010 and 2019, and in addition to seizures, some people reported fainting or tremors. Sharpless said that "we still don't have enough information to determine if e-cigarettes are causing these reported incidents" but called on the public to continue submitting reports.Additional information "may help us identify common risk factors and determine whether any specific e-cigarette product attributes, such as nicotine content or formulation, may be more likely to contribute to seizures," he said.Dozens of new reports, no clear patternsIn April, the FDA announced that it had received 35 reports of seizures related to vaping, particularly among younger users. "Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine toxicity," the agency said at the time.There have been 92 new reports since then, but the FDA didn't announce any clear pattern across the cases.Cases were reported in both first-time and experienced e-cigarette users, and "seizures have been reported as occurring after a few puffs or up to one day after use," the FDA said in April. That’s about 440 pounds, and surely no Olympic athlete weighs that much.“They are stronger than wooden beds,” Kitajima added.He also took into account the possibility of a wild room celebration after, say, a gold-medal victory.“Of course, wood and cardboard would each break if you jumped on them,” he said.The single bed frames will be recycled into paper products after the games. The mattress components — the mattresses are not made of cardboard — will be recycled into plastic products.The mattress is broken up into three distinct sections, and the firmness of each can be adjusted.The idea was to use materials that could be remade after the Olympics and Paralympics. But the cardboard frames and supports should give the rooms a spartan look. Organizers showed off the beds and a few other furnishings on Thursday at their headquarters.
