A police officer in Prince George's County, Maryland, was charged this week with raping a woman during a traffic stop. He's pleaded not guilty, but it's a disturbing headline — even more disturbing when you consider there are hundreds more like him.Yes, hundreds. According to research from Bowling Green State University, police officers in the US were charged with forcible rape 405 times between 2005 and 2013. That's an average of 45 a year. Forcible fondling was more common, with 636 instances. 508

A mom from Kansas is trying to sort out how her son's Social Security number was used to rent a car, open bank accounts and credit cards in Milwaukee, especially since he's just 11-years-old.Wiesje Sammis said she recently got a confusing call from a Milwaukee County detective."They asked if had he rented a car? I was, of course, like, 'Ummm no, he's 11,'" said Sammis.Sammis said her son Terrelle Lewis's identity was stolen and his Social Security number was being used."I think it's kind of shocking. That you can do that these days," said Lewis.According to court documents, police found the suspect at a Walmart in West Milwaukee. He was drinking a bottle beer and walking aisles. When they asked him for ID he gave them a fake driver's license and a Social Security card with Lewis's number on it.Records show the suspect also rented a car back in January and never returned it. He also opened up multiple credit cards and bank accounts.Lewis's mother said police told her the man likely bought her son's Social Security number online. She thinks it was taken during a data breach of his health insurance company four years ago."'There's no way somebody could take a child's identity. There's just no way' is what I thought," said Sammis. Now she is worried others have his number as well."I think this will impact him long term," said Sammis. To protect children's identities, parents are encouraged to apply for a security freeze. Security freezes are available through one of the major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. For more consumer information on child identity theft, visit the FTC's website.  1642

A new scientific model estimates 130,000 lives could be saved by next Spring if there is universal mask use in public. Without changes, the United States could be ontrack to record more than 500,000 deaths from COVID-19 by March 2021, the study reports.“We find that achieving universal mask use (95% mask use in public) could be sufficient to ameliorate the worst effects of epidemic resurgences in many states,” the study stated. The findings, published Friday in the journal Nature Medicine, found even if 85 percent mask use was achieved and current social distance policies remained in effect, it could result in an additional 95,000 lives being saved.According to the study, the national average for self-reported mask wearing is at just 49 percent as of late-September.The researchers ran scientific model projects using information from states about when they would implement stricter lockdown or stay-at-home orders to make their outcomes as realistic as possible based on current stated parameters and orders. These findings come as the U.S. struggles with a resurgence of COVID-19 cases. The country recorded more than 75,000 new infections Thursday alone, according to the New York Times. There are now a total of more than 8,450,000 positive COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started in the country, and at least 223,000 deaths from the disease. 1362

A massive redevelopment plan that would add a hotel and convention center to Chula Vista's bayfront cleared its last major hurdle Tuesday. The Port of San Diego board of directors unanimously approved the plan, which would add a 1,600 room hotel a 400,000 square-foot convention center along the shores of Bayside Park. The project has been in the works for more than a decade, but developer RIDA can now pull permits for the .1 billion project. "It's transformational," said port commissioner Ann Moore, noting the project would add retail, restaurants, park space and create 7,000 permanent jobs. "The revenues that this project generates will actually be used to pay for the project."Chula Vista residents at Bayside Park expressed concern Tuesday that the traffic would be overwhelming. "I think that Chula Vista is already kind of crowded so I don't know if that's the best thing to have people coming into the city," said resident Sherry Hunter. Ed Conroy, who walks in the park daily, said he expected an onslaught of traffic but that the extra crowds could benefit local businesses."It looks like they're growing," he said. "It's going to be a lot of mass transit, it's going to be a lot of traffic, it's going to be, I guess, for the good of the city."Moore said the project would make a number of infrastructure improvements, including adding shuttles and extending H Street to the water. Crews could break ground by the middle of next year, with opening as early as mid-2023. 1497
