Ed King, who co-wrote the Lynyrd Skynyrd hit "Sweet Home Alabama," the tune with the classic riff that became a Southern rock anthem, has died. The retired guitarist died Wednesday at his home in Nashville, according to his Facebook page. The post did not include a cause of death or King's age.King was a member of the Florida band in its early days. He left before a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three members of the group and later rejoined for a reunion tour, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.King was one of three writers of "Sweet Home Alabama," which was released on the album "Second Helping" in April 1974, according to Rolling Stone. The rollicking track begins with King counting "1-2-3" before the guitar lick that generations have come to know as a tribute to the state of Alabama."When we were out in the country driving all the time, we would listen to the radio. Neil Young had 'Southern Man,' and it was kind of cutting the South down. And so Ronnie (Van Zant) just said, 'We need to show people how the real Alabama is,' " guitarist and founder member Gary Rossington told Garden & Gun in 2015."It wasn't cutting him down," Rossington said of Young. "It was cutting the song he wrote about the South down. Ronnie painted a picture everyone liked. Because no matter where you're from, sweet home Alabama or sweet home Florida or sweet home Arkansas, you can relate."The iconic song was born in a practice session.Rossington told Garden & Gun?he kept playing a riff over and over while they waited for everyone to arrive for rehearsal."Ronnie and I were sitting there, and he kept saying, 'play that again,' " Rossington said in the 2015 article. "Then Ronnie wrote the lyrics and Ed [King] and I wrote the music."Four days later, the group recorded the hit, according to The Birmingham News."I am mainly known as the one who verbally counted off 'Sweet Home Alabama,' then played the infamous Stratocaster riff as well as the solos in that tune," King said, according to the newspaper."I am the luckiest guitar player that ever lived. Who could've guessed that song would pay the rent for over 30 years?"The band was named after a Jacksonville, Florida, high school gym teacher who was their nemesis. The teacher's name was spelled differently, Rossington told CNN. The group, who liked the Beatles at the time and just wanted to be a band, often got in trouble in gym class because of their long hair, Rossington said.On Thursday, tributes poured in for King.Rossington tweeted: "Ed was our brother, and a great Songwriter and Guitar player. I know he will be reunited with the rest of the boys in Rock & Roll Heaven."Randy Bachman with Bachman-Turner Overdrive said King "wrote the anthem of the south with Sweet Home Alabama and was such a talented guitarist."County music legend Charlie Daniels said King "played so many of the classic guitar parts on their early records.""Rest in peace Ed, you left behind some great riffs Buddy," Daniels wrote.King had been retired since 1996, according to his Facebook page.He once played the opening lick from "Sweet Home Alabama" for CNN's Jake Tapper, then with VH1 News. Tapper's interview with King in Nashville featured in the 2002 documentary "Lynyrd Skynyrd's UnCivil War.""Is there something unusual about the lick?" Tapper asked, during the interview.King stopped playing his red and black guitar and gave a classic answer."I think the tone of the guitar kinda, like, sounds like Alabama." 3538
E-cigarette maker Juul Labs says they are planning to make a significant "reduction in force" as it looks to the future. The company announced the move in a statement as it also looks to pull out of some international markets as they "have not provided the kind of return necessary given the cost to continue investing in the market."According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is reportedly looking to lay off about 1,200 employees, nearly half its workforce. Earlier this year, the company laid off 1,000 employees, Forbes reported.Last year, at least four lawsuits were filed against the company claiming its ads were targeting young people. They also stopped selling several flavored products in the United States last year. The company also replaced its CEO last year. The company said they are looking to rebuild trust with its key stakeholders and the public."To better serve our mission, we must prioritize how we use our resources to execute on our long-term, focused approach," the company said in a statement. "This will allow Juul Labs to continue to invest in science and evidence capabilities, access control technologies, and future products in core markets that make up a vast majority of our business. While those investments will not provide short-term revenue, they will help us earn trust and build a company for the long term to advance the potential for harm reduction for adult smokers and combat underage usage." 1446

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Renovations are underway at the East County Performing Arts Center to turn the nearly 50-year-old performance hall into a rock and roll concert venue."We have to change the vibe, the feel of what this building is," said Dirk Epperson, El Cajon's Director of Public Works. The venue closed in 2009 when the recession forced cuts in the city budget. Now, the renovations come as tour promoter Live Nation prepares to take over the venue. The City of El Cajon entered into a five year deal with the concert company to manage the building. As part of the agreement, Live Nation will bring 50 events to the venue in 2019, and as many as 70 events by 2023. Live Nation also manages the House of Blues in San Diego and Mattress Firm Amphitheater in Chula Vista."We're not sure what it will be like," said Mayor Bill Wells. "We've never had this regular, steady diet of top name acts that are coming in. So nobody's quite sure how much this is going to have a ripple effect around El Cajon. But everybody thinks it will be positive."The city is now spending .3 million to upgrade the facility. Improvements include new amenities like modern concessions, a more open entrance, and lobby area and new plush seating in the first few rows. The seating capacity for the main hall will also increase to 1,300. Part of the plan also calls for a brand new VIP Lounge at the back of the venue. The money for the project comes from the sale of the old police headquarters. As for what kind of acts will fill the venue, Epperson said it's entirely up to Live Nation."It can pretty much be any type of act or band," he said, adding the city will let the experts decide. "But you can imagine the ones that are on their way up or on their way down will be coming to this size venue."Smaller, local performances like school concerts and recitals will still be held at the venue, which Wells says is part of the community. With the upgrades, he said it should stay that way for a long time."We're in it to win it," said Wells. "We'll be successful with this." 2120
