KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  Multiple officials in Leavenworth County, Kansas are urging a county commissioner to resign after the white commissioner told a black woman at a meeting that he was part of "the master race."Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp made the comments at a meeting about a land-use study on Tuesday."I don’t want you to think I am picking on you because we are part of the master race. You have a gap in your teeth. We are part of the master race, don’t you forget that," Klemp said.  “It affects all of Leavenworth. This has been such negative publicity. It affects us. It affects the city,” Leavenworth mayor Mark Preisinger said. “It’s a stain on our community and it has to be removed.” "I was shocked. I was in disbelief," fellow commissioner Robert Holland said. "He should resign. I don't care if he's got two days left, he should resign." Klemp did not respond to a formal request for an interview, though he implied off-camera that he meant the comment as a jokeThis is not the first time the commissioner's remarks have sparked controversy. Last year, while discussing the county's holiday schedule, Klemp made controversial remarks about Robert E. Lee and George Washington."Not everybody does them all because we have Robert E. Lee...Oh God Robert E. Lee...wonderful part of history," Klemp said. "It bothers me that if we're going to have Martin Luther King Day, why don't we have a George Washington? I think George was a pretty important guy," he later added. Klemp was appointed as commissioner after Clyde Graeber resigned for health reasons.Klemp's last day as commissioner is Jan. 15. "I'm ashamed of one of our commissioners and what he has done. We shouldn't be labeled as Leavenworth County, the racist county. That's the way I feel we are being labeled," Holland said.  1901

Karen Mallard, a Virginia teacher who is also one of many Democrats challenging Rep. Scott Taylor for seat representing Virginia's second district, recently posted a video of her sawing an AR-15 apart. She said she did it to take a "a personal stand for gun safety," and is not backing down."We own the gun so we destroyed it and took it straight to the police department and dropped it off. I wanted there to be one less gun and to do something about gun violence," said Mallard. The video has been viewed more than a million times on her Facebook page. It's also drawing a lot of negative comments. Some people are saying destroying the rifle won't keep students safe. Some are saying what Mallard did was illegal."It is all to intimidate me and I will not be intimated. And I'm going to fight gun reform, for our children and for our community," said Mallard."Sawing off the end of a rifle barrel would probably not destroy it," said Virginia attorney Eric Lockie. "But if it shortened the barrel to under 16 inches, sawing off the end would make it immediately illegal and it`s a very bad idea.""I knew exactly what I was doing," Mallard said. "The gun was inoperable before I cut it. And we took it completely apart. And we didn't put all that on video because I wanted to get the message to the students that I was standing with them."Virginia Beach Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the gun was in their possession and waiting to be picked up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Memorial Day travel may be more difficult in 2018 than it has been in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.The company released its 2018 Memorial Day travel forecast ahead of the holiday known as the informal kickoff to summer.AAA said 2018 will see a near-record number of travelers, with more than 41.5 million people expected to take a trip. That’s nearly 5 percent more than 2017, with an additional 2 million people traveling in planes, trains and cars.According to INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, travel delays could be up to three times longer, becoming especially bad on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday as travelers mix with work-week commuters. Most travelers will take a car to their destination — 36.6 million to be exact. Airlines will see 3.1 million people, and the 1.8 million remaining will take trains, buses and cruise ships.Despite higher gas prices, travelers are still hitting the road. They will pay the most expensive Memorial Day weekend gas prices in four years. One contributing factor to peoples’ willingness to travel despite the price hike could be that airline and rental car costs are expected to dip this Memorial Day weekend, making up for the increased cost.Airfare is down 7 percent in price, and the average daily cost of a rental car is the lowest it’s been in four years.AAA released a list of the top 10 Memorial Day travel destinations, with Orlando at #1. 1463
