According to Green, the museum's leadership selected the city for the capital's foot traffic, not politics, and executive director Tony Zeiss says their settling on a building so close to the Capitol "was simply coincidence." The museum, which opens Friday after seven years of planning, focuses on the history, stories, and impact of the Bible, and includes interactive features like a space re-creating Jesus's first-century village.But the museum doesn't shy away from American politics, either, with exhibits detailing the Bible's importance from 17th century Puritan settlers to the 20th century civil rights movement, and how the Bible was used to justify both pro- and anti-slavery stances that drove America into Civil War."We want people to see how it was used for the good, the bad, and the ugly," says Norm Conrad, the museum's curator for Americana and Biblical Imprints.If there's any lesson on today's politics and culture visitors should take away, the museum's leaders aren't telling. The parents of Otto Warmbier are suing North Korea in a 22-page complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Washington.Warmbier was a college student from Wyoming, Ohio, who was jailed in North Korea and died shortly after he was returned to the United States in a coma.In the document, Fred and Cindy Warmbier accuse Kim Jong Un's "criminal" regime of brutally torturing and murdering the 22-year-old during his 17-month-long captivity from Jan. 2, 2016, through June 13, 2017.“Otto was taken hostage, kept as a prisoner for political purposes, used as a pawn and singled out for exceptionally harsh and brutal treatment by Kim Jong Un. Kim and his regime have portrayed themselves as innocent, while they intentionally destroyed our son’s life. The police chief in Columbia, S.C. announced on Thursday that Master Police Officer David Hurt has been suspended for five days without pay and removed from the K-9 unit after the dog he was handling, Turbo, died after Hurt left Turbo in a police car for eight hours, The State newspaper reported. Hurt was participating in all-day training and left the air conditioning running and the windows down in his police car. He also reportedly had deactivated a heat sensor in the vehicle, which could have warned him to the car's rising temperatures. Hurt reportedly had an officer check on Turbo at 11:30 a.m. on July 26, which was four hours into the training. When Hurt returned to the vehicle at 3:30 p.m., he found Turbo was panting heavily, foaming at the mouth and unsteady on his feet, The State reported. Hurt then took Turbo to a veterinarian, where the 2-year-old dog was euthanized. Turbo's official cause of death was organ failure from prolonged heat exposure. In addition to his unpaid suspension and removal from the K-9 unit, Hurt will also be removed from the Columbia Police's bomb squad for six months. Last month's incident has also prompted the Columbia Police to make institutional changes to how it cares for K-9s.
