The Ohio State University announced on Friday that its investigation into coach Urban Meyer's handling of domestic violence allegations involving Meyer's assistant coach Zach Smith will conclude on Sunday, as scheduled. A six-person review board investigating the matter will then draft a report, which will be discussed at a closed-door meeting of the university's board of trustees. Following the meeting, which will likely take place sometime next week, university president Michael Drake could announce possible sanctions. Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave on Aug. 1 after a report published by former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy claimed Meyer knew that Smith's wife had accused her husband of assaulting her. McMurphy also published photos of the woman which included a number of bruises. Those photos had previously been shared with Meyer's wife Shelley, who is also an employee of Ohio State. On Aug. 3, two days after he was suspended by OSU, Meyer released a statement admitting that he had lied to reporters about his knowledge of the allegations but claimed that he had followed proper protocol in reporting the incident to university officials. The alleged incident took place in 2015, while Smith was a wide receiver coach for Ohio State. Smith was not charged for the possible incident and did not face any punishment from Ohio State, according to public records obtained by Scripps National.Smith was fired in July when McMurphy had uncovered that Smith's wife had placed a protection order against her now ex-husband.  1600

It's in her antibodies, where the key to fighting this virus may lie.Dr. Wesley Self, a researcher at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has spent the last few months trying to figure out what antibodies are telling us about COVID-19 and how to fight it.“Understanding how the immune system responds to the virus will help development of the vaccines,” Dr. Self said.Dr. Self and his colleagues spent the last few months studying 3,000 people. All of them were healthcare workers who had tested positive for COVID-19. They found that a majority of people who had the most severe cases started out with the most antibodies. But the study also found after 60 days, almost everyone who had coronavirus lost all antibodies.That could be bad news when it comes to our bodies' ability to fight off the virus a second time.“The antibodies are one piece of the immune system. It’s possible they’ll ramp up again quickly and prevent reinfection,” Dr. Self added.All of this also means researchers now need to get blood samples from people fairly quickly after they're infected before antibodies disappear.“We need to be thoughtful about vaccines and treatments that are specific for this virus,” he said. 1662

The organizers behind Time's Up said they will "stand down" on the red carpet at this weekend's Oscar ceremony.Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who is one of the leaders of the organization, told members of the press on Thursday that the message of Time's Up is not about wearing black to awards shows and overshadowing the main event. The number of people within the orbit of Vice President Mike Pence who have contracted COVID-19 in recent days has grown to five, according to CNN and The New York Times.Those five include Pence's chief of staff, Marc Short, an outside advisor, Marty Obst, and aide Zach Bauer.On Saturday, the Trump administration confirmed that Short had contracted COVID-19. In a statement released, the White House said that both Pence and the second lady both tested negative, and CNN reports that they tested negative on Sunday as well.On Saturday, the White House said that Pence would "maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel."However, The New York Times reports that "several" White House officials privately believe that Pence should stay off the campaign trail due to the outbreak. CNN spoke with officials who said Pence staff members are "scared" of contracting the virus.Just hours after the White House confirmed Short's diagnosis, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said on CNN that the Trump administration wasn't "going to control the pandemic" and would instead focus on treatments and vaccines.The outbreak within Pence's office is just the latest rash of COVID-19 cases that have reached the inner circle of the White House. President Donald Trump himself was hospitalized after contracting the virus earlier this month, and both first lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron, have also caught the virus.
