BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand more than 9 percent in 2010, Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), said Friday.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China, the central bank, made the remarks in an interview with China Reform magazine, which is posted on the SAFE website Friday.China's GDP grew 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010 from the same period of last year.Yi said China's economic growth rate will eventually slow down because its economic base is expanding, while the country's development faces huge pressure in fields of environmental protection, resources and energy."The restriction caused by environmental factors has been unprecedented, such as underground water, air, and carbon emission," Yi said.Yi said the priority of China's economy is the quality of the growth."That's why we have to restructure and transform growth modes -- for improving the growth quality and the efficiency," Yi said.

BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- More relief supplies, worth 20 million yuan (2.94 million U.S. dollars), have been sent from China to flood-hit Pakistan, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.The shipments mainly contained urgently-needed daily necessities, including grain, cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt and medicine, the ministry said in a brief notice on its website.The supplies are to be transported through a land route to the Sust dry port near the Pakistan-China border from Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the statement said.However, the ministry did not say when the supplies would arrive, as workers were still rushing to repair the road linking Kashgar and Khunjerab Pass.China is one of the first countries to respond to the relief needs of Pakistan when it was hit by the worst floods in 81 years. China's first delivery of aid, worth 10 million yuan, was delivered on Aug. 4. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.

ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.
