SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heart transplant saved his life but took away a San Diego doctor's ability to treat his patients. That is until technology gave him that back too. "I can't be around sick people because the immunosuppressant medications I have to take for the rest of my life will cause me to get sick much more easily," said Dr. Murray Alsip. For five long months, Dr. Alsip sat in the ICU, waiting for a heart. He'd been living with a serious heart condition for 17 years. After several false alarms, his call finally came. The doctor would soon receive 20-year-old Mathieu Bergeron's heart; the young man died tragically in a skateboarding accident. Alsip was able to meet his donor's mother eight months after the transplant. "She's such a wonderful person, a giving and caring person. That meeting was wonderful, she had so much to say about him and the things he liked to do and about the person he was and about his energy," said Dr. Alsip. With his new heart beating strong, Alsip could once again do many of the things he loved, liked hiking. And while he could no longer practice in an office, Alsip knew he had to continue practicing medicine somehow. So he looked into a more modern form of medicine and discovered the telemedicine provider MDLive. Working from home, Dr. Alsip can help patients with over 50 routine medical conditions, like sore throat, common cold, and fever."I'm just happy to be out there seeing people again, being a physician in the way that I trained."He's able to help people every day, fulfilling the very reason why he got into medicine. "To be able to actually help people again is a wonderful feeling."Dr. Alsip was able to meet his donor's family through Lifesharing San Diego. The nonprofit encourages everyone to consider becoming an organ donor; one donor can heal up to 75 people. 1837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric. With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need. The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley. Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. They plan to make 275,000 more meals over the next year. For more information on the program, click here. 1535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A partnership with the United Way and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council pulled off a donation drive-through at SDCCU Stadium Tuesday morning that served 500 families in need.Cars holding vouchers from the various unions represented by the council lined up and proceeded through the assembly line, loading up with food and toys donated by their fellow workers.Every year, thousands of union workers make a monthly donation from their paychecks to assist their fellow working families and community members in need. This year's recipients included fire victims and other families identified by several non-profit partners, according to representatives with the Labor Council."You've got electricians and teachers out here helping school bus drivers and janitors and security guards, those who have fallen on hard times and need a little extra help," says Keith Maddox with the Labor Council.Holding two events, one in San Diego and the other in Imperial County, 650 families total were served by the annual donation drive.Feeding San Diego helps procure the food for the drive, according to Unions United/United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki. 1209
