SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer responded Friday after Governor Gavin Newsom issued new stay-at-home orders for the region.Faulconer said in a statement on Twitter that local businesses aren’t being treated fairly under the new guidance.“Restaurants made good faith efforts to comply with COVID rules. Now the rules are changing once again,” Faulconer said.“If the Governor shuts restaurants down, it’s only right the state compensates them for the costs incurred moving outdoors,” he continued.RELATED STORIESCalifornia's latest stay-at-home order to take effect in San Diego County on SaturdaySan Diego businesses hope to spike business ahead of more closuresThe statement comes after Newsom said Thursday he was pulling the “emergency brake” to stop the spread of coronavirus. The new orders shut down businesses such as hair salons and barbershops, zoos, movie theaters, wineries and breweries, and outdoor playgrounds, among other sectors. 961

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local supporters of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump were watching the election vote count closely throughout Friday.Ellen Nash, who heads the San Diego chapter of the Black American Association of Califorina, a minority advocacy group, put up her Biden/Harris yard sign about a month ago.During the election season, she helped organize a voter registration campaign. Since election night, it's been a constant case of the nerves."Incredibly excited, praying night and day," said Nash. Her eyes have been glued to the television and coverage of the vote count. Throughout Friday, her candidate edged closer to being declared the winner."I will feel relieved that the trauma is over. I'm speaking as a black woman who has been under significant trauma the last four years, in terms of some of the language and behavior of the leader of the free world. Hopeful change is coming," said Nash. There is no questioning her dislike of President Trump, but on this day, she is focused on the country’s future."I believe Biden can bring this country together. I believe he can help us heal as a nation," said Nash. It's a different opinion for local Trump supporter, Blake Marnell.During the campaign, Marnell garnered national attention for wearing a brick wall suit, illustrating his support of President Trump’s border security policy. Trump even called him up on stage, as Marnell attended some 15 rallies where the president appeared."He has the right to make these legal moves. He shouldn't be conceding ... mainstream media can do anything they want in terms of calling an election. That doesn’t make it so," said Marnell.Marnell backs Trump's vow to press on with recount and lawsuits involving his claims of voting fraud. After Trump spoke Thursday, some criticized him for alleging fraud but providing no evidence."It would be irresponsible to produce evidence of fraud in a press conference. The time and place for producing evidence would be in discovery in any court proceedings ... The vote count is not ideal, but I'm still hopeful," said Marnell.Marnell plans to attend a weekend Trump rally in Phoenix. He also attended a rally in Las Vegas Wednesday."I would go to show my support for the president. He has fought long and hard for us over the past for years, and I don’t intend to abandon the fight for him," said Marnell. 2355

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lupus patients were shocked and scared when they found out they couldn't get a refill of their life-altering prescription, due to COVID-19.Grandmother Michele Fumar said her daughter has had lupus, an autoimmune disease, since she was 11. She's 27 now, married with two young kids. Her daughter got an email from Kaiser Permanente reading in part, "in order to keep an essential supply of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) for critically ill COVID-19 patients, we have placed a temporary freeze on refills."She was just shocked, we were all shocked," Fumar said about reading that email. "This drug is very important to maintain her health so yes it is just very frustrating."The kind of lupus her daughter has attacks her kidneys. Even while taking her prescription she's had complications. Fumar said her daughter became ill at the mall several years back, suddenly weak with a headache. That trip to the emergency room turned into a week long hospital stay.Fumar said her daughter has been trying to wean off of the medication with no luck thus far. "She only has 16 days left of her prescription." Now they're both scared. Her daughter was told to space out the medication, but they don't know how that will affect her health.Janae Lessnau was just diagnosed with lupus in January. On average it takes six years to get diagnosed with lupus, meeting several criteria from several specialists, the Lupus Foundation says.Lessnau said the drug has already had a huge impact on her life, "it helps with fatigue, it helps with the joint pain. It's not really affecting my kidneys or any vital organs right now but not being on it, it could increase the spread, you know increase the process."Lessnau said she felt lucky to pick up her monthly prescription Tuesday at CVS. She heard at the pharmacy she won't be able to get a refill in the future. In contrast, CVS put out a statement reading in part, "With client consent, CVS Caremark is setting appropriate limits on the quantity of each of these medicines for potential use in treating COVID-19. Members who already take these medicines for approved uses will be able to bypass the new quantity limits.""We all feel bad for the patients who may be suffering from COVID-19 but it's not a proven solution," Fumar said. Lessnau agreed adding, "when did we get to the point where we pick and choose lives?"The Lupus Foundation is contacting politicians in Sacramento for help, hoping to find a solution."Right now, today we can't say yes there is a shortage, I don't believe that's true. But what I am afraid of is it will be very quick, because if people are hoarding the drug it will turn out to be like the toilet paper," Executive Director of the Lupus Foundation Southern California Division Elizabeth Savage said. After reaching out to Kaiser Permanente they said they are re-evaluating their policy. 2874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s now been a week since the first Americans began their quarantines at MCAS Miramar after evacuating from the epicenter of the coronavirus, and all Charles Wasserburger wants is one thing: a pizza.“I’m just eating the food they have here and suffering through all the pizza and burger commercials they have on TV,” he said.To be clear, the Nebraska native says he’s not complaining about conditions on the base where he has been on a mandatory 14-day quarantine since Feb. 5. The government has provided all 232 evacuees at Miramar with televisions and cell phones to call or video chat with loved ones, free of charge. RELATED: Second case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego CountyBut after seven days of meals provided by the government -- mostly catered Chinese food -- Wasserburger knows there’s glorious pizza just beyond his reach.“I really did beg to have a pizza delivered because there’s a Pizza Hut like a mile away,” he said. Wasserburger works for a microbiology company. He was in Wuhan, China on business when the outbreak began. He hasn’t shown signs of the virus, but with two cases now confirmed among evacuees at Miramar, his wife in Omaha is a little worried on his behalf.“Even when you’re trying to keep a positive attitude, which he has done, there’s still going to be those days when you’re second guessing, “Could I be that person that comes down with that horrible thing next?” Fauniel Wasserburger said. The evacuees are allowed to mingle with each other in quarantine, although they’re supposed to stay six feet apart. Their only contact with the outside world is through video chat and package deliveries.“We had 180 packages from Amazon delivered yesterday, including fresh foods,” said Caroline Thorman, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Service Administration For Children and Families.RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of San Diego coronavirus patientDeliveries to the base must be screened first, then they can be taken to the lobby of one of the two hotels where evacuees are staying, Thorman said. Anyone who interacts with people under quarantine must wear personal protective gear.Thorman said evacuees have received a number of donations from the community, including books, children’s toys and diapers. The Red Cross provided comfort kits. Anyone wishing to make a donation in the San Diego area should call 2-1-1, she said.“We want to make it easy as possible and as comfortable as possible for these returning Americans,” she said.It wasn’t immediately clear why pizza posed an added challenge, but Thorman said she was happy to accommodate the request. 2654
