SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An El Centro teacher was arraigned Tuesday after she was accused of providing marijuana and alcohol to students on a school camping trip.Monique Garcia, 50, faces two felony charges and three misdemeanor charges garnering a maximum sentence of 8 years and 4 months in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt said a 17-year-old student on the trip gave Garcia a ride to a grocery store where she bought alcohol and then drove to a dispensary where she bought cannabis, including edibles.Marquardt said students were intoxicated and became sick after consuming the alcohol and/or cannabis.According to the Southwest High School website, Garcia was head of the math department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An autopsy report released Friday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner indicated a young woman who died after being arrested by San Diego Police had PCP, THC, morphine, and meth in her system. The Medical Examiner determined Aleah Jenkins, 24, died of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest while in custody and acute methamphetamine and fentanyl toxicity. Jenkins was arrested during a traffic stop in University City on Nov. 27. Officers determined she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for meth possession and arrested her. They also found a bag of methamphetamine in the car, according to the autopsy report. During the traffic stop, police called paramedics because Jenkins vomited. She said it was due to an upset stomach, and officers said they canceled the ambulance call. RELATED: San Diego woman dies in the hospital after arrestJenkins was taken to SDPD headquarters, where police went to get water for her, the autopsy indicated. When the officers returned, they found Jenkins unresponsive. There was a bag of white powder on the ground near her, and a glass vial and another bag of white powder in her clothing, the autopsy report said. The Medical Examiner’s report indicated the officers administered CPR, and she had a pulse when paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital Jenkins died at UC San Diego Medical Center on Dec. 6. The Medical Examiner’s autopsy summary indicated Jenkins had no injuries which would have contributed to her death. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who mailed out her state tax payment at a post office in Mira Mesa got a big shock a few days later. A week ago, Barbara Reynolds wrote out a 9 check for her state taxes. She drove to her post office on Mira Mesa Boulevard and dropped it off around noon."I thought it was safer to come here," said Reynolds.Days later, she got a call. A bank teller in San Juan Capistrano was looking at her check, but it looked a lot of different. The amount had been hiked a bit to 9. Instead of the state, the new payee was the name 'Marco Antonio Lopez Ramirez."The teller shredded the check, suspicious because a man hoping to deposit the check had presented a dubious driver's license and an odd-looking check. As in other stolen check cases, the thief likely used a chemical solution to dissolve away the ink and 'wash' the check, before filling in the blanks."Very disappointed. It wasn't a good feeling at all," said Reynolds.The feeling was made worse because of how that check was stolen. One possible cause is 'fishing,' where thieves use a simple string - connected to something like a rodent glue trap - to fish mail out of a collection boxIn this case, Reynolds says the stolen check included her social security number."I'm very worried about identity theft. I won't be using the mail for future important documents or payments," said Reynolds.Reynolds filed a report with police and the Postal Inspection Office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An elderly woman died while she was with her family waiting to cross the border into San Diego Sunday afternoon, according to our reporting partner Televisa.Televisa reported it is unknown why the woman, who was in her late 80s, passed away.This comes as people on both sides of the border expressed frustration at incredibly long wait times."It's unfortunate because I think the policies that CBP puts in place, protocols, punish border crossers," Pedro Rios said. He said it took four hours to cross in Otay Mesa on Saturday.New protocols went into effect on Friday due to the pandemic. Customs and Border Protection planned on slowing down traffic, closing lanes and adding secondary inspections, aimed at delaying those traveling for non-essential reasons.In addition to San Diego, Tucson, Arizona, El Paso, and Laredo Texas have similar protocols in place.One woman waiting to cross into San Ysidro told Televisa, "Yes it is difficult, but no one wants to be here in Tijuana."Another woman said they were heading to the U.S. to visit friends and go to the beach. When Televisa asked if they thought that was essential travel, they replied in Spanish, "Yes, because we're tired and angry.
