SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local retiree is back home and recounting how a trip of a lifetime turned into a painful nightmare during a ride on a tour bus in Africa.Three weeks later, the pain remains constant. But Jeannette Craig, 68, is grateful."Just so glad to be back home," said Craig, from her hospital bed at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center.After saving up for more than a year, the Santee woman set out on her dream vacation to southern Africa in September. She was on a tour bus headed to an elephant preserve in the country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring the 12 others on board.RELATED: San Diego retiree injured in African tour bus tragedy"I was in shock. Things flying everywhere, people screaming. I was screaming, because I was hanging upside down. The guide couldn't unlatch me out of the seat belt, so he pulled me out and I dropped 4 feet," said Craig.Wearing that seatbelt, a habit of hers, saved her life. She says she'll never forget the grim sight of the injured mixed with the dead, as she was transported by helicopter to a clinic, then taken to another in South Africa.She was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis, a shattered leg and torn ligaments, and broken ribs.After her trip insurance initially refused to cover a medical flight home, her family got involved and eventually, the insurance covered the flight. Craig arrived a few days ago.At Kaiser Permanente, doctors would diagnose additional injuries, including blood clots in her leg and lung, and broken bones in her spine and chest.Craig faces a long difficult recovery. The adventuresome retiree is ready to face it."I look forward to physical therapy, I hope within a year, I'll be hiking," said Craig.That recovery will be a long one. In total, the average San Diego household spent nearly ,000 per year on expenses, according to the report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. From 2017 to 2018, more than ,000 went to housing for the average San Diegan, accounting for nearly 36 percent of families’ household budgets. Likewise, San Diegans paid an average of more than ,300 on transportation and over ,600 on food between 2017 and 2018. 530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit has now been filed surrounding the platform collapse that injured 21 children and some adults last November at Vault PK parkour gym inside a Barrio Logan warehouse.Two mothers and six children are represented in the complaint, filed against Vault PK and San Diego's Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS), among other defendants.MTS owned the warehouse and subleased the space to a business that subleased again to Vault PK. A few days after the collapse, MTS was hit with a dozen building code violations.Some of the families are suing MTS and Vault PK for negligence, among other complaints.MTS told 10News it won't comment on pending litigation.  713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political attack ad accuses mayoral candidate Barbara Bry of repeatedly falling asleep at public meetings. The ad is from a committee that supports State Assemblyman Todd Gloria. It says San Diego needs a mayor on alert given the coronavirus outbreak, the threat of wildfires, and the homeless crisis. It then cuts to shots of Bry appearing to doze off at two City Council Committee meetings within the last year. The committee, called Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020, is backed by more than a dozen organizations, including the Municipal Employees Association and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Gil Cabrera, its principal, is responsible for the ad."If it was a random falling asleep during a 10-hour council meeting, I'm not going to get into that, there's an amusement factor to it but I'm not going to get into it. It's the pattern of it," Cabrera said.Cabrera said Bry regularly dozes off at public meetings, but also said employees who see it fear retaliation for speaking out. Still, the ad raises questions about accuracy. It shows an image of Bry appearing to sleep at a committee meeting on the city's Get it Done app, while the narrator says she fell asleep during a meeting on police reform. "If this ad is talking about a meeting on police reform but showing a picture of Barbara Bry in a very different hearing, one, that plays a bit fast and loose with the truth and two, it makes problems with the ad the story rather than the Barbara Bry falling asleep on the job, which is what the backers of this ad wanted you to think about," said Thad Kousser, political scientists at UC San Diego.
