SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jonathan Goldwasser was one of the first business owners to set up shop inside One Paseo in Del Mar Heights.He opened the Parakeet Cafe when One Paseo’s retail area launched in March 2019 - and followed that up a few months later with Juice Crafters.He says business is of course best when the plaza is full.However, One Paseo has been anything but full since March, when coronavirus restrictions went into effect.“This has been hard,” Goldwasser said. “We went from maybe 20 employees to four.”Things, however, changed this week, when One Paseo fully reopened its retail center. On Thursday, there were people sitting at its socially distant tables and chairs, while shoppers in masks walked down its courtyard.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said, noting he’s back up to about 20 workers.About 25% of the center’s 40-plus businesses are mom-and-pops that rely on foot traffic.Juice Crafters closed entirely and Parakeet Cafe was reduced to takeout and delivery, sales going down 80%. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said.The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road.Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. The center has also increased security to ensure the rules are followed and added sanitation protocols.Most of One Paseo’s retailers are now open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If violence is a learned behavior, so too then is non-violence. That’s the philosophy of two San Diego men who have worked together for 24 years to stop violence and save the lives of children. Azim Khamisa and Ples Felix have a message of peace-making to save the lives of children. The pair teach students in 5th through 9th grades the principles of accountability, empathy, peace building, and, above all, forgiveness. “We're not going to wake up and be in peace, We must teach restorative practices and create healthy kids, and healthy minds. Children who practice the principles of non-violence and actively commit themselves to becoming peace makers,” said Azim Khamisa. Khamisa started his journey after tragically losing his only son, Tariq Khamisa, when Tariq was 20 years old. As a college student working part-time, Tariq was lured to a gang house to deliver a pizza and fatally shot by then 14-year-old Tony Hicks. “It was like a nuclear bomb went off in my heart and I was broken into millions of small pieces. Violence is very real. It cuts deep and scars the soul,” Khamisa said. Khamisa founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to teach non-violence and took the extraordinary step of reaching out to Tony Hicks’ grandfather, Ples Felix. “I’m not here in a spirit of revenge...I'm here in the spirit of forgiveness because we both lost a son,” said Khamisa. Felix said he was praying for a way to reach out to the Khamisa family and provide support. He saw this as an answered prayer and accepted Khamisa’s hand of forgiveness. “To go forward in a way that in my life is totally unassociated with respect to that kind of trauma. I wanted to be with Azim's family...and commit to be of service any way I could,” said Felix. That was 24 years ago. The two men say they are now closer than brothers. Their safe school model is a 10-week curriculum, teaching lessons on empathy and compassion along with conflict resolution. The program also brings a peace club and leadership program to the schools. The results are staggering. The program has been shown to cut truancy and expulsion rates by 68 percent and increase conflict resolution peacefully by more than 90 percent. Khamisa and Felix have reached almost 600,000 students and, through digital and television coverage, the figure is easily into the millions. Former students such as Rocio Hernandez credit the program with saving her from despair, violent revenge, and thoughts that life isn’t precious. “On the way home from school I was attacked by gang members...I was only in the 7th grade. That could have been a turning point in my life. I could have turned violent myself. It’s crazy how the Tariq Khamisa Foundation came into my life at the right time. I remember coming out of that assembly empowered like I could take on the world,” said Hernandez. Hernandez now lives a positive, productive life and speaks to young people about her journey to happiness. It’s a journey that started with forgiveness, which Khamisa calls a gift you give yourself. “Mandela has a great quote: Resentment is like taking poison, and waiting for your enemy to die.” 3146

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Military families say the squalid living conditions detailed in a new report by the Military Family Advisory Network released Wednesday don't fully portray their struggle.In Murphy Canyon, the issues range from mice, to dry rot to rust. Shelby Stevens' husband is in the Navy, and they've been stationed in San Diego for three years. On the porch she pointed out what looked like half painted pergolas and said they were full of dry rot. Inside there is no microwave, and the kitchen was much the same as it was originally in the 1990's. "We've got ant problems, roaches, mice," Stevens showed 10News her shed in the back yard. Inside there's half a dozen mice traps, with little black dots covering the floor. Stevens says those are mice droppings.On her phone, an image of a dead mouse, she said her dog killed. These issues echoed throughout the military community.A woman who didn't wish to be identified, for fear of retaliation, said her closet door had loose rusted screws she had to keep out of her toddlers' reach. She said the repair work on a clogged toilet was shoddy, saying the men left mold, and poop around the base of the toilet.The new report by the Military Family Advisory Network breaks down the problems renters face by base. For San Diego military families, the top two issues are maintenance and mold."We absolutely know that the nearly 17,000 who responded to our questionnaire, this is their reality," Shannon Razsadin, Executive Director of MFAN, said.The survey went out last January and ran for a week. Razsadin hopes the report gives military families a tool to create change.The military moms who spoke with 10News say it's not a complete picture of what they're dealing with. Stevens said 17,000 people across the country is a very small part of the military community as a whole. She said in the last several months their service has declined."We've had no shows from maintenance men, we've had no shows from contractors who are scheduled to come out to my house, no show, no call. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Isabel Rosales was brutally attacked and nearly killed by her husband in January 2018."It was life or death, my ex husband attacked me in front of my kids," said Rosales.Rosales was married for 16 years. She and her ex-husband moved from Chicago to San Diego for a fresh start. But Rosales says the abuse only got worse."Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, everything," said RosalesShortly after their 16-year anniversary Rosales told her Ex-husband she wanted a divorce. She barely made it out of the family home alive."I was getting ready to go to work and we had been arguing...his behavior had been kind of erratic over the last few weeks. I thought he was agreeing with me when he said it ends here. I thought he was getting his suitcase and leaving. He followed me into the bathroom and he stabbed me. I ran into the kid's room and he stabbed me in front of the kids who were sleeping. I was able to push him out of the way and I ran out of the house. Before I ran out of the house though he attacked me again at the front door. I knew if I didn't make it out of the door it was over and by the grace of God the door opened."Rosales was in the ICU at UCSD for three days with a breathing tube. She says she fought to stay alive for her three children and her mother, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2011."My mother was murdered by her boyfriend in Mexico. And my ex-husband attacked me in a very similar way."Rosales says she had what her mother did not. Help. Hers came in the form of Operation for Hope, a San Diego non-profit that helps provide emergency services to victims of domestic abuse. Rosales was given emergency shelter and money to pay for a divorce attorney."It helped me have a future. It gave me exactly what it promises- HOPE."Rosales has this advice for other survivors."I was ashamed to ask for help. I didn't know services like this exist. I am here to tell you there's great courage in asking for help and taking that first step... I hope and I pray to change one other person's world out there by sharing my story. My heart aches for those who do not make it like my mom, for those who do not know how to get out or where to go, for those that think an abusive relationship is normal. Anything is possible and each and every person is deserving of a beautiful and safe life... I am happy now. These tears are tears of joy."During the pandemic, domestic violence incidents have increased. From January to June 2020, there were 8,495 domestic violence incidents reported to law enforcement in San Diego County, as compared to 8,235 during the same period in 2019; a 3% increase from the prior year according to the San Diego County District Attorney's office. The Victim Assistance Program advocates at the District Attorney's office served 2,940 victims from March-July 2020, as compared to 1,941 in 2019; a 51% increase in those served.Operation for Hope will hold it's biggest fundraiser of the year October 28, 20202. 10News Anchor Vanessa Van Hyfte will be emceeing the live event and silent auction.
